Having grinded (ground?) up to wizard level 245, I'm now attempting to mana farm using instructions from a video I found on Youtube. I reallocated my skill points to my best imitation of his setup (level 30 in chain, pool, crit, mana leech, resonance, gem cost, building cost, mana stream, and fury; my setup is 30 in gem cost, mana stream, resonance, 9 in red/black/yellow, 12 in orange and building cost, 3 in fury and all spells minus WoE, 12 in WoE, 6 in amps, and 1 in everything else [from the talisman]) and have spent the past few hours trying to get a pool started up on the same map he's using (I2, Glaring, all traits maxed). Every time, it fails miserably.
I simply do not have the mana I need to get both the farm and the killgem going. I just don't. I keep getting overrun within the first 10 waves no matter what I do, even if I don't anger at all. And it pisses me off when I read how basically everyone else on this board figured it out when they were at half my wizard level...
So my request is for someone, using plain, simple English that an idiot like me can understand, to explain how to 1) get a functioning, profitable mana farm going, and 2) get a killgem up and running, on --> 3101
Obviously you won't be able to do a perfect setup at your level. You can throw away most of the skills for more starting mana. Mainly spells, amplifiers, black and building cost. Use white instead of black for now until you are able to reach high waves and have significantly more skill points.
Sure, you won't reach wave 500 or anything, but you will get enough XP to improve gradually.
Lime, if I threw away building cost then I wouldn't be able to do ANYTHING early on... the white instead of black part is duly noted though. The points in spells were because I have various +skills talismans and I was rounding them all off to the nearest multiple of 3. I'll try a couple runs without those though and see how it goes.

You won't need 30 points in it though. Early on, one or two traps with farming gems are enough, with a kill gem tower further behind. No need to build something huge with amplifiers, you will get enough mana over time for that.
I NEVER use mana lock lol. Not even at my esteemed level 3142. It's just plain annoying. I'd like to have seen something like a -7% mana gain(inclu replenish, kills, farms, everything), at trait 1, and at trait 7 -49% mana from all sources(excluding mana shards).
I think that'd be cooler right? And less annoying, mostly.

Not really, orblets would become pointless.
I think mana lock would become more usable at later levels.
