Elder scrolls IV Oblivion is by far the best. I have been playing it far too long, have all the expansions, and am still not bored with it. You can beat the game 50 times and you will never get bored with it. That is, if you live long enough to beat it 50 times. This game is probably one of the longest available.

for me the best rpg is world of warcraft.

tbh, i think runescape is the best FREE non-retail non-beta rpg around. not saying i like it though

to my opinion swords and sandals is worth mentioning.

i think guild wars its a lot better than world of warcraft because you dont have to play monthly and its more challenging
