It's easy to prevent:

Keep an external hard drive and keep tabs on how much memory is left in it. When it starts getting full, just get a second one.

i dont know about you guys but i think i MIGHT KNOW what causes it..at my school i took a magnet and it caused the "Blue screen of death..if you have anything with magnetism move it away and see if it prevents it from further cause.

Theone99, I don't think everyone has magnets around there computer, that's just one cause of it.
The real cause is overheating or a serious system malfunction, I had it with both at the same time.
The serious system malfunction could be caused by a flickering power source. If you have a battery backup (black box you plug your cables into) then the battery might have popped, like what happened with me. If so, DON'T OPEN THE BATTERY COMPARTMENT! Just take it to hazardous waste dropoff.

Okay I actually have a couple of things to say:

First, in regards to williamrmck's post, most people do have magnets around their computers. They usually take the form of speakers and headphones. Both of these devices have both a permanent magnet and an electromagnet. An oscillating current drives the electromagnet up and down between the permanent magnet. When the electromagnet moves up and down, it pushes on a diaphragm. This action vibrates the air around the diaphragm and produces sound.

Okay, enough of the Physics lecture and time to get back on topic.

Secondly, I have actually encountered the "Blue screen of death." When got my laptop, it got a major virus. This virus caused the blue screen to appear about five minutes after I turned the power on. What eventually worked, to get rid of the virus and the blue screen, I had to restore the computer to the factory default by inserting the recovery disk. Of course, I lost a lot of my files and programs, but I considered it a small price to pay for getting rid of the virus.

You can't get the BSOD unless you completely and blatantly misuse you computer. I got it once on an old computer when I accidentally deleted an important dll file. You need to completely erase all of your computer and then rebuild the OS. I would backup your important files of a CD or a jump drive.
