Christopher McDonald is pretty funny. Leslie Nielsen is a comedic genius, as are the Zucker brothers who wrote it. I agree, Drake was not the best choice for a main character, but he had very few funny lines anyway, so I don't think anybody his age could play that part.
I ended up watching the funeral scene five times just because I thought it was so funny when they all just said "Goodbye!" without any solemness in their voices.
