Doom 3 was scary yes, but when you get some demon screaming at you at every corner, it quickly dies out. it becomes predictable, which is the worst thing that can happen to a horror game.
F.E.A.R. 1 is probably the closest thing to a perfect scary game you will meet. the fearsome elements are scattered well throughout the game, they are not tiresome, nor are the predictable. it does not consist of up in your face BUUUUUH!!!!!!s but more of a laughter in the corner or something in the style of it, that makes it a really good scare, without beeing too scary. also great gameplay and story, but a bit repetitive enemys and environments. multiP is also good. i advise you to get it for the pc.
F.E.A.R 2: Project Origin is, like to predecesor, a good game. the gameplay is very well made, and the weaponry and enemys are more veried. but the story lacks the tension and scariness of the previous game. the scares become predictable as well. its also incredibly short and the multiplayer is a bit dull. i advise you to get it for computer. can easily be run on a midrange computer.
Dead Space is a great game, featuring a good story and a strong gameplay. the idea of cutting enemies limbs off it fantastic and is brought well to life. the game features some pretty sick eyecandy and also some audiologs that will freak you pretty much out. not for the bad stomach. the scares are decent, but the most decent about them is the musicfeed. it feels like to get a slight warning before it happens, so you wont exactly jump out of your seat, but still scares you crapless. the "survival" elements, like scarse ammo and stuff feels great, and creates a lot of tension and exitement. weapon diversity is good. only advise is stay away from the rocket launcher.
Condemned and Condemned 2 are pretty much alike. they do not use the Buuuh scare so much but the audiofeed and the visuals make for a good scary cocktail. enemies look great and so does the environs. the games feature good stories and good gameplay as well. online is dull, but beating the crap out of people is insanely fun!!!! also prepare for some pretty sick things.
i would say that F.E.A.R, Condemned 1 and 2 and Deadspace are good scary games. Silent hill and Resident evil maybe be a bit over the top, but its good anyway.
for youz who consider Resident Evil 5, i just wish to say that the gameplay and all that is fantastic... it just isnt scary in any way...
probably F.E.A.R. 1 But Dead space is a worthy candidate:when you enter an elevator and a monster starts running at you and you kill it but when you turn (and it's pitch black) and your pointing your gun at a monster that is standing 2 inches away from you, that's scary !.
