AP is short for ArmorPoints You get 2 AP when you comment a game or comment someone via the comment box. You also get 2 AP for every game you rate.
You get 1 AP if you post on forums like you just did. Some forums have no AP like the Forum Games forum and the Newcomers forum.
You get 20 AP for every game you submit to this site.
You get 25 AP for every merit you get. A merit is a good review. You comment a game and a mod or admin decides whether or not the comment is merit worthy. Fore more info go here.
If you see your points starting to go down it my be because you spam or flame. Another thing might be that your comments get deleted as well as posts for any reason.

That doesn't seem to get me merits, you could check out some of the games I commented on, I've done some well thought out sentences and it hasn't gotten me anywhere, and trust me, I'm in a journalism class, so I love to write and type!

I just noticed someone mentioned in this thread that you gt 10 AP for referrals, can some one elaborate on that. I know what a referral is but not in the context of AP.

Not necessarily long. Merits are given to well written posts, game reviews or any sort of text you can write here on Armorgames(excluding your About). They are usually helpful pieces of writing that give great tips on different subjects. Explaining things to help others. Or it's a game review that was very skillfully written. It usually is a bit long, but not too long as to make the readers bored.
