Penicillin was discovered thousands of years qago by Bedouin tribesmen in North Africa. In 1897 Ernest Duchesne, a young French Army doctor "rediscovered" penicillin when he noticed Arab stable boys rubbing mould from damp saddles onto sores. He did research into it and called it Penibillium glaucum. He sent his research to the Institut Pasteur but they didn;t even acknowledge receipt of it. He died in 1912 of tuberculosis which (ironically) Penicillin would later help to cure. Then in 1929 Sir Alexander Fleming rediscovered it again. The bacteria [i]Penicillin notatum looks strangely like human hand bones (sort of). Brie, Limburger, Camambert, Gorgonzola, Danish Blue, Roquefort and Stilton all contain penicillin.
