I was visiting checking out this web-site and they had a link to "The 5 Basic Survival Skills". I got intrigued and decided to see if I had any of them. And, here they are:
First Basic Survival Skill -- Fire Second Basic Survival Skill -- Shelter Third Basic Survival Skill -- Signaling Fourth Basic Survival Skill -- Food and Water Fifth Basic Survival Skill -- First Aid
You - stranded in the woods. Can you survive?
Me? Um... For fire... I saw on a few shows that showed putting dried weeds in a pile and smashing rocks close enough for it to light a spark and hopefully that spawns into a bigger fire. Still, I have little faith in me actually creating a fire without the help of a lighter or match(low self-esteem? lul), so I'm going to vote NO on this one.
A real shelter... Err... I saw the television show Survivor and saw them putting up a bunch of bamboo poles and giant leafs over it. Is that enough? I can probably do that, but again, I have little faith it'll turn out worthy enough to protect me from the elements for a few days.
Signaling. The mirror I can do, if I had one. Let's just say I didn't, can I find another way? The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is to create a fire or jump up and down trying to see if anybody saw me... The latter might be considered useless.
Food and water - I know about boiling water due to television again (is there anything TV can't teach us? Haha ^_^). At least that way you can get SOME form of drinkable water. Food? If it was possible to fish I can do that. At least I *think* I can... For the leafs and berries out there on the other hand... I probably would ingest some sort of poison berry and die. I'll probably stay away from that sort of food 'cuz I have no idea on which is good for you and which ones are not.
The most I know about first aid is cleaning the wound, tying a bandage/rag around the wound - tightly - and getting help from a professional A.S.A.P. It's probably the best you can do, right?
Questions: 1) Picture yourself getting lost in the wilderness and you need to stay alive for a few days. Which survival skills do you have, and do you think you could survival the wilderness for a few days by your lonesome?
2) And, do you think survival skills are a necessity in this day and age (if you live in a civilize country).
Lighter and wood. If there is one thing I have never done, it's go into any wilderness area without a lighter and signaling mirror.
Second Basic Survival Skill -- Shelter
Palm leaves and branches do the trick brilliantly.
Third Basic Survival Skill -- Signaling
See number one.
Fourth Basic Survival Skill -- Food and Water
Dig a hole over a damp area of ground or find a stream. As for food, hunting is too time consuming. I'll eat tree leaves, preferably ones with a lot of glucose. Keep the energy up.
Fifth Basic Survival Skill -- First Aid
Aloe vera is one of the best antiseptics around. I would find a plant, and use it for everything from sunburns and abrasions all the way to major gashes. Anything that I can't help heal with the plant will probably kill me anyways. If I NEED stitching I would find a cactus of some kind and use the gristle from meat, if I have any.
I never leave into the outdoors without a first aid kit, a bottle of water, a collapsable shovel, and a source of fire, so I would at least survive till rescue in most situations.
no i dont thats why theres shows like man vs wild to explain this kind of things when it comes to idiots like me (i mean i understand i need water and stuff like that but i wouldnt have any idea how to find it in a dessert like those kind of survival skills) and i think if we every got into a nuculear war or something or you were stuck on an island then yes you would definitly need survival skills
Fire- Uh... I have no experience. I know that you can make a spark by hitting flint and limestone together... I think... but I've never done it and will probably fail. And besides, how am I supposed to find flint?
Shelter- I can't make something good. I made three walls once out branches and bark, but I seriously doubt that will stand up to much.
Signaling- Nope. I'm lost here. Unless there are big rocks around or snow. Then you can write "HELP" really big.
Food and water- Here I might be OK. Maybe. I know how to get fresh water: you have to dig a big hole in the ground, put a container in the center, spread a tarp over the hole (If I don't have a tarp, that's a problem), weight the center and edges with rocks, and wait. Water is supposed to collect on the tarp and run down into the container. If there are plants around, you can tie a plastic bag around some leaves and get a little water that way. Water should collect in the bag. As for food... I know the process you're supposed to use for testing plants (doesn't work with mushrooms). Maybe I could find something edible. I have no idea how to hunt, though, so I doubt I'll get any meat. And if I did, I wouldn't know how to prepare it.
First aid- Bring a doctor with me. Otherwise, I'm dead.
Yes, I think it's important to learn survival skills, even if I don't have any. You never know when disaster will strike. It's best to be prepared. *Studies survival book*
Fire and first aid would be a problem for me. Since making a fire without any supplies is hard and rock on rock action doesn't garentee fire. It's also kinda hard to stich yourself up without stiches.
those arent skills... skills is like getting out of bed before noon, getting off the couch to get a remote, getting off the couch to get some food, getting off...you get the idea, well yeah, i got tons of skills
I know how to get firewood in my area, how to build a fire, and I can start a fire with friction(it's friggin hard, but give me about an hour and put my life on the line, I'm sure I can do it).
Second Basic Survival Skill -- Shelter
I have no idea. Hehe.
Third Basic Survival Skill -- Signaling
I can make a fire, so smoke signalling is plausible. I can also know the most basic thing in Morse Code; SOS, so that might help, I dunno.
Fourth Basic Survival Skill -- Food and Water
Water's not something you can really get...it's just luck if it's in your area. Follow animal tracks for water, because if there's animals around, there has to be water. Food, not that difficult, I know which plants are edible in my area.
Fifth Basic Survival Skill -- First Aid
Wilderness Survival Medical class ftw! I'm pretty good at this one. Tourniquets(just don't leave it on too long) and some other stuff. Or....you could just use the most basic survival rules of all, first thing I learned: 1. Don't get lost. Nah...jk. But seriously, here's some basic survival rules(part of the NOT GETTING LOST segment). 1. Always tell someone where you're going, and when you should get back. 2. If you're lost, stay put. 3. When you go hiking/rafting/climbing/whatever, always take more food and water than you need, just in case. And...yeah....that's about it.
First Basic Survival Skill -- Fire i can gather firewood and set up a fire, but if i cant find something to make sparks with well im SOL
Second Basic Survival Skill -- Shelter easy find a large amount of sticks and make a lean to, using a grass/mud combination to patch in the holes
Third Basic Survival Skill -- Signaling smoke, if i could get a fire started
Fourth Basic Survival Skill -- Food and Water i know some poisonous plants, and alot of poisonous animals. i could make a spear and hunt so food would be relativity easy. water just look for a creek bed, dry or not and follow it. or if you're near the ocean follow the shoreline, all rivers lead to the ocean after all
Fifth Basic Survival Skill -- First Aid i can clean and bandage a wound, even stitch it if need be, or cauterize it [burn the wound close]
If I was going to be out in the wilderness I would likely bring a knife lighter and compass with me. I might also bring a small supply of food along. But for the sake of argument let's say I lost all my supplies.
First Basic Survival Skill -- Fire
dry material such as leaves or grass for kindling. this can be ignited with a spark from a couple stones, preferably stones with high metallic content. This can also be done with a peace of wood kindling and a stick but it's much harder.
Second Basic Survival Skill -- Shelter
If the tree line is thick I probably won't have to worry about shelter to much. But branches and large leaves can be used as a temp cover.
Third Basic Survival Skill -- Signaling
If I can make fire then I have my signal. adding things like air plants and moss will cause the fire to smolder heavily sending a very clear signal that from the air should be able to be seen from miles.
Fourth Basic Survival Skill -- Food and Water
In the wilderness there will likely be a source of water around such as a stream. I can purify the water using my fire so it's drinkable.
If I was going into a wilderness I would try and get a basic understanding of eatable plants. I also have no issue eating insects. Hopefully I would be able to catch a small animal to eat as well if I was to be lost for a while. (Of course all cooked to prevent parasitic infection.)
Fifth Basic Survival Skill -- First Aid
Along with learning the basic eatable plants I would also want a basic understanding of medicinal plants. it's not to hard to make a splint using vines, strips of cloth, or other similar materials. I could also use strips of cloth from my shirt to help stop bleeding and cover the wound. I could clean the area using the purified water.
