Haha it happens to us all, the link thing not the cougar thing. I don't think my dog would try to fight, it would be running away as fast as it could. But that may be because my dog is tiny not any where as big as a Golden Retriever. But maybe if she were bigger maybe she would have fought idk.
Well a cat will usually not try to save you. :P Dogs sometimes develop a special kind of bond with their owners, and sometimes stuff like that happens.

Sometimes make me wonder what cats are good for...

Don't I wish that would happen between siblings...
This is actually a fairly typical canine response. If we look at canines we see that they develop a social group, which we call a pack. If a canine is properly treated in the family environment their social behaviors correlate directly to their position in their social environment and they adopt a protective posture toward members of their social group, whether it be with humans, other canines, or any other member of their group. Rarely are we presented with such extreme cases as this, however the protective instincts of canines within their social surroundings has been well documented. A simple google search will net numerous results attesting to this.
To see the reasoning for this we need only look at the feline spectrum of the animal kingdom. As we all know (or should from biology classes) felids are predominately solitary creatures, and the evolution of a social hierarchy is rare among feral or wild felids. Although lions are an exception to this, they are a rare exception at that. Domestic cats have developed a social structure in relation to human ownership and companionship that has been seen to be more akin to a parent/offspring relationship, in which the human owner acts as a parent figure and with the domesticated cat functioning in a state of extended kittenhood.
this information is my own compilation of data from wikipedia regarding domestic cats.
What an amazing story - something unheard of here in the UK, I understand there probably was no alternative but to shoot the Cougar in order to save the dog.
So glad that the boy is unharmed and I hope Angel gets the veterinary treatment she deserves.
Oh, and I don't agree that she should be living her life outside, she deserves to lie next to a warm fire and have lots of human affection after her selfless actions!!!
