From what I know, you should learn off acoustic and then move on to electric once you feel comfortable. That's how most of the people I know got started.

It's not the acoustic that's bad, it's probably what you've been listening to.
There are so many different styles of acoustic.

Also, Guitar Hero is nothing like playing a real stringed instrument. I play balalaika and a little viola, and I can easily tell you having played Guitar Hero well before that that a stringed instrument is 15x more complicated.

So just force yourself to start on acoustic. Learn some chords, get used to the feeling of guitar. Then move on to what you want to do. It's not that easy picking up a new instrument by yourself. If you attempt that, you either fail or must practice often and be consistent in your effort.

I started with electric. I think acoustic necks are too wide.

Well, here's my advice: start out with the acoustic. It is more difficult to play than the electric, because the strings are thicker and your mistakes tend to be more pronounced.

The distortion on the electric guitar (even if you're playing "clean" there will always be a little distortion) hides your mistakes. When you are starting out, this is a bad thing because you want to know where you need improvement. It is possible to develop nice tone on an electric, but it will probably be much easier/quicker on an acoustic.

Also, the increased resitance from an acoustic's thicker strings makes learning chords "easier." In the short run, it may seem like it's actually more difficult because it is harder to get all the strings to sound right, but the effort pays off eventually. Simple bar chords are so easy on the electric that most people never learn to do them right. Which means they run into problems when they try more difficult chords.

The acoustic forces you to use proper technique (and builds finger strength), thereby building a nice foundation of skills that will be beneficial as you advance.

Of course, you could just get an acoustic-electric...

Note: I am a little biased here, because I simply love playing the acoustic more than the electric.

The more important question is why are you even considering buying a guitar that expensive if you have never even played before?

Yes. It means you either have to buy a left handed guitar or re-string a right handed one. Don't try to be cool and act like Jimi. Just buy a left handed guitar.

I started with Bass. It built up my finger strength to play guitar. For guitar i started with Acoustic to see what the guitar really sounds like before it gets distortion with the electric guitar. If you want to play awesome buy an acoustic first because you will recognize the sounds of the guitar better. If you want to be the weird 12 year old boy who wants to play guitar because he can play expert on guitar hero, then buy electric and give gibson some money on a instrument that you will only use for 3 weeks and then let collect dust in your closet. Have fun playing!

You are best to buy an acoustic and learn chords etc on that first. I recommend you do this not only because it is a good first step (and cheaper) but you can also then have it for those 'Campfire' moments which might occur later in life.

Plus, if you learn Chords it will make serenading your sweetheart so much easier, and trust me, it is worth it...because yea...

If you learn one it will help with the other. As long as both are six string guitars. Some left handed people learn the guitar for right handed people. Thats best. I think. you dont have to go threw life playing left handed guitars which are probaly rarer and more expensive.
