I've always wanted to create something somewhat unique. So I came up with this idea. Rather than tell a story as it happens, I organize every event into a series of reports. They include, but are not limited to: Letters, incident reports, media reports, etc.

Here's the first one, the part that started it all:

Act of War upon the United States of America

Incident Report

Aggressor: Terrorist Revolutionaries
Defensive Force: 84th Special Operations Battalion, 2nd Special Forces Division
Commanding Officer: Major James William Hendrix
Original Purpose of Station: Assist the ATF in searching out suspected Al-Qaeda terrorist caches and members within 16 blocks of East Los Angeles.

Casualty Count: 32 Allied dead, 243 Revolutionary dead :: 1 Allied wounded, 19 Revolutionary wounded
Total Involved count: 321 Allied Special Operations :: 300 Revolutionary

Incident Report

At 0843, Terrorist Revolutionary forces attacked the 84th Special Operations, stationed in Los Angeles. During the confusion, command was lost by Major Hendrix, and the forces were split in two. Thirty seven seconds of fighting ensued before command could be regained by Major Hendrix. During this time, fourteen Allied casualties were sustained, list to be included after this report.[1]

The Battalion was forced into seven separate buildings, although communication between commanding officers was maintained. The fight became a defensive struggle. 0847, Allies were still separated, as well as still being forced into buildings. By this time, not all Allied soldiers were within the secured buildings. Seven casualties sustained.[2] It took a further nineteen seconds for Allies to file into the defensive structures. At this time, fire was being returned, and Revolutionary casualties were mounting. Marksman Lieutenant Rodger Harris was instrumental in keeping building four secure. Recommendation: Bronze Star.

0852. By this time, forces were secure inside the seven defensive structures, and Allied casualties dropped, with Revolutionary casualties significantly increasing. The Revolutionaries, however, managed to set up a 52mm CRC (Close Range Cannon). Before it could be identified, it fired one shot into building six. Seven casualties sustained.[3] CRC was quickly identified and destroyed.

0855. Battle had been going for twelve minutes. In the three minutes between the destruction of the cannon and 0855, five casualties sustained, including Major Hendrix.[4] All surviving Revolutionaries by this point have fled. Total body count: Two hundred forty three Revolutionary. Number not identified as final until 1042. Identities are currently unknown for all killed Revolutionaries.

Aftermath

[1] :: 1LT Roberto Lopez, SGT Timmothy Winsley, CPL Alfred Winsley, PFC John Vessel, SFC John Wilson, CPL Tyron James, SGT Erikk Lamphere, PFC Jones Green, PFC Louis Sigmond, PFC Douglas Klawinski, PFC Leonard Pattuk, LT1 Kran Filess, CPL Jonathan Jameson, WO1 Sonny Willard [All KIA]

[2] :: PFC Nane Fullins, PFC Joseph Corin, PFC Corinth Miller, SSG Jonathan Ralph, PFC Jonathan Jackson, SGT Iman Luisa, 2LT Andrew Rallings [All KIA]

[4] :: PFC John Gerald-Meller [KIA], PFC Al Dull [KIA], MAJ James Hendrix [WIA], 1LT Allis Murray [KIA], CPL Steven Ellis [KIA]

Award Recommendations: Bronze Star (2LT Rodger Harris [7 Revolutionary confirmed kills])

This declares a formal attack upon United States of America, by extreme right wing terrorists. Thus, this shall be classified as an act of war, and the declaration should be drawn up immediately. It is my personal recommendation that the 84th Special Operations Battalion, 2nd Special Forces, be commissioned as a specialist counter-insurgency force. They have proven themselves in several capacities, including recent deployments to Somalia, Kuwait, and Afghanistan, efficient counter-insurgency and low level special operations forces. The 2nd Special Forces Division should be assigned to seek and destroy all extremist forces within the United States of America.

Report drawn up by Lieutenant Colonel William Miles Borne, 2nd Special Operations Division, and approved by General Quincy Adam Lewis. Addressed to the President of the United States and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. September 17, 2021.

====================================================================

Thoughts?

PS: I'll have the media report in as soon as I have a chance, as well as the President's response.

It was pretty good, though with all the numbers(the casualties and whatnot) it was a bit difficult to read.
Also; you kept referring to the Union as the Allies.
Other than that, great story.

Considering how most of the mentioned were dead, not really. I might fit you in as an award winner, but as this isn't a conventional story, but rather a collection of reports, he won't have a major role. However, I can make him a Major and give him control of the 55th Special Operations Battalion, if you want.

Also; you kept referring to the Union as the Allies.

I was doing that on purpose, for two reasons. As this has no set side, and is an insurgency as opposed to the first Civil War, simply referring to the Union would, by technical definition, refer to the Revolutionaries. Secondly, a bit of back story, the United States at this point is actually a conglomerate of Mexico, the USA, and Canada. They each maintain their own political government, but the military is one. They are essentially regions within a political union. If it was an assault on a National Guard unit, it would have been referred to as the USA.

It was pretty good, though with all the numbers(the casualties and whatnot) it was a bit difficult to read.

I apologize. I'll use numbers as opposed to words next time. Was just trying to make it look formal.

Other than that, great story.

Thank you!

Very interesting. I love stories like this when they're done right. And so far you are doing things right. I enjoy how you make the reports sound crisp and formal in true military fashion. I also enjoyed the way you drop the reader into the story feet first and they either pick it up or fall flat on their face, I am a fan of unconventional writing methods and despise spoon feeding my audience. Keep up the good work. I currently have no real critism for this, but I will provide some as the story progresses.
