At the moment I'm stuck in my classroom because people are doing nuclear tests and they seem to think that some bricks, plaster, and a crappy roof will keep us safe if anything goes wrong. so yeah, we're probably screwed.

Eh?

Well, Merriam Webster says that the word "alphabet" originates from..

Middle English alphabete, from Late Latin alphabetum, from Greek alphabetos, from alpha + beta

Derivatives.

The word "alphabet" came into Middle English from the Late Latin word Alphabetum, which in turn originated in the Ancient Greek Î'λÏάβηÏÎ¿Ï Alphabetos, from alpha and beta, the first two letters of the Greek alphabet.-Wiki

Heh, you copied off Wiki and forgot to erase evidence that you did so. Wikipedia's sources pointed to Britannica Online, which pointed to Merriam-Webster. Also, Efan was asking whether the word alphabet comes from alpha and beta, which are obviously the first two letters of the Greek alphabet.

Ah no, I sourced my information, and it comes from the latin word "Alphabetum" which came from the words, Alpha and Beta.

You did know I wasn't accusing you of plagiarism? Ultimately, the word alphabet came from alpha + beta.

1375â"1425; late ME alphabete < LL alphabetum, alter. of Gk alphabetos. See alpha, beta

No problem Ben, it's a common problem. Now I am firmly convinced that I have to add a smiley face to every line I intend to convey playfully which could be misinterpreted as being sarcastic.

Woah, spent nearly a page on the definition of a single word.

Alpha,Beta,Gamma and X and we are exposed to them all.

You forgot neutron radiation.
And I think you were actually referring to background radiation before?

@OP: Somehow, I find it hard to believe that nuclear testing would be conducted near an inhabited area, let alone a school. I mean, come on. What is this, Chernobyl?

I think the OP is talking about school chemistry.

You forgot neutron radiation.

Probably because unless you work in a nuclear power plant, or regularly approach the outer reaches of our atmosphere, you'll never encounter it.
