Mr. Mandelbrot was the father of fractal geometry, in fact, he coined the very term "fractal." While he was not the first to actually create a fractal or study its functions, he was the first to capture attention to it using computer-generated imagery and visualize the famous Mandelbrot set.
He also demonstrated examples of fractal arrangement in nature, from tree branches to blood vessels to snowflakes, or even in human achievements: music, art, architecture. Perhaps it's our subconscious ability to realize the mathematically beautiful that draws us to these things, or even just to fractal art.
