I disagree, my brother drew and named a baby pikachu named whatever the baby ones are called. This was long before it showed up in America, and maybe before it was released anywhere.
And the sad thing is it's almost true. Pokemon are always going to get lamer, even if the original artists do them. Actually, I found the new generation to be less ugly and despicable than the fourth, which only had a limited amount of decent looking pokemon. So it's true that American designed that horror!? I'm speechless...
Fifth generation is probably going to be better than the fourth. My only backup for now is that the pokemon types are going to be more various, as in more pokemon in the elements that were scarce in the last gen.
But come on. Which is worse. That? Or this?
Come on! If you find all the other dumb-looking pokemon, that one isn't so bad.
I noticed that the first generation of pokemon were very unique and had a very "okemon" like style to them. When you saw a first generation pokemon you knew it was a pokemon. The latter generations of pokemon look more generic and seem to resemble Yugioh, digimon, etc. onsters. They are just more generic looking.

Yes, they've come up with quite a few strange type combination and I'm pretty eager to try out innovative mixups like grass/steel or bug/electric! As for bad looking pokemons, nothing beats ludicolo...No wait there's worse...Bibarel!
What I'm comparing is the artwork. If you pair gen4 and gen1 with the same gradients, then you would have nothing to complain about. As far as I'm concerned, the look of the new generations are more-detailed, thus better.
Does that not look like a pokemon? It has the same characteristics of the older gens, just more detailed.
