An Unusual Meeting By Yoshidino It was a harsh and stormy night on the craggy island of Alcatraz. The thin outline of the prison walls was hard to distinguish in the cloud-ridden sky. Kevin White; a prisoner on Alcatraz stood on the shore of the bay and saw the crudely fashioned boat approaching the jetty like a lone wolf on the prairie. Kevin had served his ten long years and was leaving. Just as the boat came in to dock, Kevin jumped aboard and entered the small cabin. He didnât take a second glance at the cruel mistress he called Alcatraz. The boatmanâs coarse voice broke the lingering silence, âSo, Sonny where you heading?â âOh, just across the San Francisco Bay, to Pier 39, please.â Kevin replied in a bleak tone. The engine shuddered into life and as the pungent but familiar odour of diesel and smoke filled the air, the boat slowly began its long journey home. As the boat left the shore, Kevin couldnât help but remember the strange encounter that had occured almost five years ago⦠* * * Five years ago⦠For a prisoner in Alcatraz, Kevin was surprisingly well educated; his parents had brought him up well and made sure that he had the best in life. However, there was nothing they could do about his current dilemma. Kevin was one of the select few that had escaped Death Row and been transferred to a lower security prison, but unlike the others he was innocent. His high status and excellent education made Kevin well respected and liked across the prison. He taught many prisoners how to read and write and in return they made sure no harm came to him. At nighttime, Kevin always went through the same tedious process. He would stand by his mirror and examine his striking blue eyes, rough auburn hair and clean shaven jaw. This wasnât just vanity; it was because every distinguishing feature brought back memories from home. One frosty winter night, when the when the icy cold air was as unforgiving as it could be, Kevin felt an unusual tingling slowly creep down his spine as if a feather was gently caressing it. Then, he heard a raspy voice that chilled him to the bone, âKevin⦠Kevin White⦠I Am The Reaper⦠I Have Come For Your Soul, Kevinâ¦â Kevin could see a thin figure dressed in a long black robe and the faintest glint of a scythe in the darkness. Intimidated by the ghoulâs eerie appearance, Kevin - in an adrenaline-fueled act of bravado shouted, âI have cheated Death once already so this should be simple!â âNot A Wise Choice, Kevin⦠Do Not Fear, For The End Is Near, Kevin⦠See You In The Afterlife, Kevinâ¦â A puff of smoke engulfed the Reaper and as if by magic he had gone and Kevin was sleeping like a baby. The next day, Kevin woke up later than usual after the nightâs harrowing ordeal. He took it to just be a dream, but later would he find out just how wrong he was⦠* * * Friday the 13th of December, one day before release Kevin lay on his tough, unmade bed and thought of home. His mum and dad knew he was innocent. He hadnât heard from them in ten years since that fateful day when he was sentenced⦠* * * âDONG! DONG! DONG! DONG!â âKevin Get Ready âDONG!â To Meet Death⦠âDONG! DONG!â You Shall Die Today, âDONG! DONG!â Whether It Be Now Or Later⦠âDONG!â Mark My Words Kevin⦠âDONGâ You Will Dieâ¦â âDONG!â * * * âSonny, sonny, wake up weâre nearly there.â âNearly where?â Kevin muttered, still groggy from his lengthy snooze. âNearly To The Afterlife, Kevin!â the Reaper shouted triumphantly, and as another puff of smoke filled the air, Kevin could see the boat about to crash on a group of jagged rocksâ¦
