"Examine it by hand" = just look at it?
Look at it and feel the ground.
Start digging.
Is it painfully obvious or does it require both time and foresight?
It's a fairly large area, you won't be able to dig it all up.
Not all of it, just digging a few five by five foot holes.
Yeah how big is it?
The overhang is about 150 yards.
Where at? And how deep?
Lets start five feet from the edge and lets go with 5 feet deep.
You unearth nothing.
Make one every three feet. If need be summon something to help me dig.
You unearth more nothing after the next few holes.It's getting pretty dark.
Keep going for a few more holes before retreating for the night.
