No it was a ghost, but it's in the ghost descriptor that they hunt down anyone that disturbs/steals there items.

And now it's goi to maim/kill us since Assassins are useless against ghosts. Can you tell me how this is relevant or in ajy way useful to the quest?

You got a magic weapon/spells? If you do you just have to drive his soul out of her body them that would work, well it has a 50/50 chance of working.
