I wonder how good this is going to be and how much it will cost.

Here's a link for those interested. Not hijacking your thread or anything, Snowrut, but it's always great to have a link to show guys if they don't know

I'm confused with this. Is this their next generation portable? Just a phone with Playstation gaming capabilities? Now I heard of taking many low-quality gismos and sticking them into one piece of hardware, but this is ridiculous... They could be doing so much more, aka raking in more cash since that's what they are after, if they would just stick to one aspect of entertainment. If they are wanting to dominate gameplay, then stick to that and scrap the rest! If they are wanting to dominate communications, then do the same! Having more junk attached to the hardware will not do justice to what their main goal is.

I dont think sony is going to make much money off of this. I think they should have stuck with the PSP.

That's an unfair assessment, although the phone doesn't have top of the line hardware it is still a great device and with the rise of mobile gaming (and consequently separate gaming pads) it only makes sense to add the pad to the phone. It's going to have a huge library of PSX games, will be able to play any emulator on Android (NES, SNES, Game boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, N64) and will eventually be able to download most PSN Store games.

The hardware, excluding the screen, is on par with, if not better than, that of the iPhone 4. Don't count this phone out simply because it's something new.

I'm a bit excited about this. I just hope it's as good as it looks. Hopefully they don't have hardware problems with the slide out controls. Those slides are always the first thing to go wrong.

Those are some good points you bring up, Samy. I'm fully stuck on the philosophy, however, that if a product is to be the cream-of-the-crop compared to other hardware, then it needs to stick to what that particular direction is. Now, if this is a fusion of sorts between gaming (in particular, emulating) and properties of a phone, then I could see some merits in distributing this. However, you see things like the PSP2 that Samdawghomie thankfully brought up (thanks for showing the real portable console) that brings up the (many) features of the product. When I think of Playstation Portable, I think of gaming. If the hardware is not wholly focused on gaming, then how do distributors believe that their product is superior compared to its challenger, the 3DS, that is almost-wholly focused on gaming?

I'd be interested to hear your opinion of the iPad then.

If the hardware is not wholly focused on gaming, then how do distributors believe that their product is superior compared to its challenger, the 3DS, that is almost-wholly focused on gaming?

They appeal to different audiences. The PSP and the DS do even. This isn't an attack on the 3DS, it's clearly trying to outdo the iPhone by working with Android.

I should put this out there: handheld gaming sucks. Nintendo's got Pokemon running for them, that's about it.
