We used to have 'seasonal' armatars, which we only release for short periods of time. If you choose one during those periods, then you get to keep that until you change it to something else.
Seeing that you aren't able to see all the armatars since you aren't a gold prince, there are people out there that choose armatars from the higher AP packs. Unless you used Google to find the armatars or something. That, and what cormyn said.

A lot, there have been many armatar contests. Use the thread-search and search for 'Armatar contest'. It should bring up the contests, users submitted armatars in the threads, then Carlie would add the ones she saw fit.

They're armatars, and you can't submit armatars to the site anymore because there hasn't been an armatar contest in a long time.

All of them. All the seasonal armatars are made by users. However, if you mean how many of them are made by the user who are using them, I don't know. It doesn't really matter either, considering there was no separate thing for that. Bronze's armatar was part of one of the summer contests back then, and I believe a few other used it when it was about.
As for the crew of "How do I paint...": A 200x200 file, get either a digital painting programme (of any kind) or a good scanner, and draw/paint. Just like a regular image, but it will be a lot smaller, and thus often a bit more simple. Preferably you should draw in a bigger resolution, and shrink it later on. Save it and wait for AG to support user uploaded armatars, be happy.
