The other day, I thought of a story idea. How about a sort of surreal story? How about a really long story and people can add to it? Of course, not without reading the last submission. How about it?
Most of the machine-gunners diverted their fire upwards into the paratroopers. The majority of them were dead before they hit the ground and the remaining ones were cleaned up quickly. "Well, that was easier than I thought it would be," said Captain Drake, "Concentrate your fire on the enemy trench again!" "Sir, they're starting to charge!" shouted Lieutenant Dan.
They buckled down into the shallow trench and waited out the hail of shells to be able to line up their shots. The enemy was only 100 feet away by that time. Out of nowhere a Heinkel He-111 came spiraling out of the sky. It slammed into the division of Germans. "Sir, did you see that?" "Of course I did, stevens!" said Drake. "Cap'n! We need to pull back now or we're dead!" Said Dan. Almost instantly after Dan finished, a grenade blew off his legs.
Horrified, Captain Drake, stared at his Lieutenant. He couldn't think almost. " Get him back!" Drake shouted to Stevens. " Get him back! Cover him, Kerry!" Stevens promptly obeyed. He took Lieutenant Dan up and hurried away as fast as he could for the tunnel. He kept low. Captain Drake scanned the sky. The planes were still circling overhead. He shouted for the anti-aircraft guns to be manned. Several men scrambled to the guns and fired into the air. " We're just trying to ward them off, don't focus on trying to hit them!" Drake shouted. " Or we'll run out of ammo!" Stevens returned. " Dan is dead, sir! What do we do now!?"
He weighed his options for a moment, hesitated, and sadly shouted, "FALL BACK! FULL RETREAT!" He turned to Stevens, "You're promoted to Lieutenant." "Sir, we may not have another chance to hold them off if-" "I can't lose more men out here," Captain Drake interupted, "We can snipe them from the woods a quarter mile behind us."
" But sir," Stevens insisted. " No! We have to wait for reinforcements! FALL BACK!" Captain Drake's men scrambled from the trenches and made for the forest which sat behind them like a giant shadow. Emboldened, the enemy also jumped up from their trenches and followed. " Hurry!" Drake shouted. " There's not time to lose!" The men ran for their lives and soon disappeared into the woods. The enemy followed, but soon stopped on the fringe of the woods. They seemed not to dare to go in. " Take them down, one by one, men," Drake ordered grimly. Just then, several jets roared overhead. Captain Drake peered through the trees. " Just in time!" He shouted sarcastically. " They had to wait until I lost my Lieutenant! Fire away!"
They began firing relentlessly at the enemy troops, who retaliated and fired back. "Sir," shouted Lieutenant Stevens, "Those jets aren't ours: they're the enemy planes returning to base!" "Then shoot 'em down!" Captain Drake shouted back. After a few minutes of fighting, another soldier yelled "Sir, the reinforcements have arrived!" About 75 more troops were now assisting them. A captain from the reinforcements ran up to Captain Drake demanding a status report. "We were forced to surrender the trench but we're holding them off here." Captain Drake replied. "I was expecting to be able to gain some ground today," responded the other captain, "We must retake that trench!"
They sat in what seemed like and endless stillness. Then Drake blew once on the whistle. "Smoke 'up!" Cried three soldiers simoultaneously. Then Drake gave two more blows. The troops roared out of their hiding spots and were attacking at full force. The Germans were in a panic by the sudden manuvere. "Sir!" Stevens yelled. "Un-Indentified projectiles! INCOMING!" "I never thought they'd do it!" Drake said. The V-1 barrage came as a surprise, the Germans did have the upper hand. "HIT THE DIRT!" Drake called.
Immediately, Drake's men fell flat. But they poised their rifles and continued to fire. The Germans stopped and turned back to the trenches. So far, they'd hoped to follow Captain Drake's men to the woods. The fire was too thick. " They're falling back! Hold them!" Stevens yelled, taking down a retreating German. Over and over again, the jets flew overhead. At Drake's command, a smoke screen was dropped and several of the fresh troops went in with masks. Drake couldn't believe how heavily armed the Germans were. " Sir, look out! We have two planes down!" a soldier cried. Captain Drake looked out past the woods. A plane was spiraling towards the earth, smoking, a tall flame in the air.
As the enemy fighters crashed in the field, the firing continued. "Good work, men! We're hitting 'em hard!" Captain Drake shouted. "Sir," asked Lieutenant Stevens, "Should we chase after the enemy? What are our orders?"
" What are are orders? Our orders are to continue!" Drake roared. " Move, move!" Stevens scrambled back towards the men and started shouting loudly for the reinforcements to cover. " Keep them back!" " Cover!" " Watch the planes!" " No, Stevens! Watch yourself!" Stevens whirled around and saw a shell flying toward him, he back up, stumbled and fell where he stood. With a great shout, Drake started towards him.
