Since I have started this topic I will make the first post
My first RTS game was Rise of Nations and I stil like it becouse of its gameplay, reserch system and all of its units. Every Nation in the game has at some point a unit no other nation has.All of this things make Rise of Nations a game that every RTS gamer must play at least for an hour or two.

My favorite RTS/RPG game is Dawn of War 2.
The sound, gameplay, graphigs all make this game a game worth to stick with for a long time and ofcourse the difirent enemies especialy the realy big ones make this game a #1 in my PC.And ad the weather and time of day that changes with every misson and the loot that you get after every misson and you will see that Dawn of War 2 is a RTS gem.

Some other great RTS games that I have played are Company of heroes and the greatest of the great Starcraf 1 and 2.Those of you who have played them I dont have to say anything and all you who havent all I can say is play them as soon as you can becouse you dont know what you are missing.

Definitely Supreme Commander would be my best. It has (in my opinion) the biggest scale out of all the RTS games.
It has 1000 unit-cap and the smallest unit is the size of a at-st from star wars. The biggest maps are 81x81 km

i have Age of Empires, and Starcraft + xpac and Ive played many rts' and hate them ._. im awful, when i do play i get computer ones over console ones tho, the controls are less awkward. My fav outta the ones Ive played is prolly starcraft cause its the only one Ive played for more than 30 mins and rage quited. Its a bad topic for me cause I'm awful at the games and don't play them often but still. :P

After RPG games I think RTS is the best game genre.
A few RTS games I played.
The whole AoE trilogy. I think 2 was the best of them all.
Sins of a Solar Empire. You really should check this out. It is like Starcraft but in space.
C&C generals and red alert 2
Starcraft 1. Really great game planning to buy 2 when I have the money.
The whole Total War series which is a mix between RTS and TBS. One of the best series I played in my life.
Empire Earth 2. Really nice game cuz you play in every time. You can be the roman empire with roman soldiers against America with airplanes and Germany with big shielscasting robots.
And I don't remember more.

The first and one of the best RTS's i've ever played is Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge. A legendary RTS. Another good Strategy from Command and Conquer is Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars.

As for Atari, they published Act of War. Another great RTS.

my first was C&C tiberian sun and i was not really impressed... later i discovered age of empires and age of mythology and they remain my favorite to this day... i always liked warcraft 3, but i had a problem on my pc i used to play it and everything was perfect until at some point my pc would restart itself for some reason... it wasnt that often but it was really frustrating and degrading my gaming experience so i stopped and never really got to complete the campaing until today :/ i have a new pc now but i havent bother to download it yet with all the good games coming out but RTS games can be pretty fun oh and ofc starcraft how can we ever forget that :P

I cannot believe I haven't put my two cents into this thread yet! :P

0. AOE
1. CC
2. WC
3. SC

0. AOE was my first RTS game. LOVED IT! Played soo much of it. then AOE2 came out. Good game, but the simplicity was gone. It was too technical and too much going on and yeah, the simplicity was gone and this turned out to be its down fall. *Well not to get into the debate of gaming servers and the lack or support there was not to mention the complete drop of them. Gamespy and B.net were your choices and gamespy sucked. IMO

1.
CC was another great game and LAN made it what it was. It wasn't something I really got into, but still. It was a fun game and will go down as a history maker.

2.
WC3? Where are people coming up with this? Ok, I'll give it this, at the time is was a thought out game. HOWEVER, it was not balanced well. Just like SC1, only near its end did Blizzard really start caring about balance. Also, Blizzard said time and time again that they'd being making all kind of ladder maps. They didn't. And their ladder system sucked. I played the game long enough to know it was a SP game. Some of the good things that came out of WC3 was DOTA. That was a huge movement in the game and now out of it. And here's the kicker, the ladder system match maker was the forerunner for their new system. So, hail to the forerunner I guess.

3. Which is really 4, Starcraft
SC1, man. I've put more hours into that than life. Eat, sleep, breath SC. Never got into the professional tournaments. Didn't have the time nor transportation. But SC was and is in my bones.

Having to moved into sc2 was a big deal for a lot of people. So much had changed, and the fact that other games had evolved and moved on was one thing. But now our beloved game had to be new, and current. And living with a 10+ year old game style of life, this was going to be rough. But luckily the transition went well and now its the number 1 RTS out there. Period. Its kicked HALO off the main stage at MLG twice. And probably for a third.
The fan base is huge for an RTS. Just like HALO and COD games, it has some hardcore fans. But unlike HALO or COD the players really don't dress "hood". Or at least, that's the impression I get.

IN CONCLUSION:

I am going to have to pick Starcraft 1, and its mainly nostalgic.

I never played DOTA, I didn't care about balance.

All I know is I spent countless hours making custom maps.

Something I haven't been able to get into in Starcraft 2 because it's too annoying

Age of empires 2 is awesome still haven't played 3 but most people say it isn't that good.

Medieval total war 2 battles are awesome but the rest of the game is turn based which can be annoying.

Army men: RTS REAL TIME STARTEGY(that was the title, rts, and then that)

Basicly, your green plastic army men wageing war on the tan plastic army men around this house. You construct a HQ for special units and commands, a resource dump to have toy dump trucks retrive plastic and batterys for resources, a barracks for troops, garage for vehicles, turrets, AA guns, towers, barbed wire, the whole shabang. The campaign was this: A missing green commander painted himself tan and took incharge of the almost-destroyed tans. He began useing strange devestating weapons to take out outposts, so you invade the human house he is hideing out in. Some missions you would just have a special sqaud of units and play it out without building. You would also fight additional things, like ants, cockroachs, ECT. It was my first RTS game and really fun, however, it was for the game cube, and my game cube stopped working along with all it's game's after about 5 years of use. D=
