I thought of this question late last night as I was playing LA Noire. I saw all the detail of it and thought of other games such as Heavy Rain and Shadow of Colossus. Tell me what you think.
Art is the product or process of deliberately arranging items (often with symbolic significance) in a way that influences and affects one or more of the senses, emotions, and intellect.
They are as much as movies or literature except this form is interactive. If you agree with this view than can I direct you to a weekly web show on the escapist called "Extra Credits." Every week they discuss a topic about video games and often refer to them as an art form. Watch it and tell me what you think.
I believe that Video Games are an art, by their own merit and by a combination of the merits of other forms of art that get in there. At least, in the more intellectual ones like Heavy Rain and LA Noire.
In terms of other art...
Graphics = Art(in the sense of the visual) BGMs = Music(Many BGMs are even orchestrated) Cutscenes = Movies Plot = Poetry/Novels
In its won merit, it is an art of immersion, you could say. As well as being like the other arts in the above qualities, it also has to string these together in conjunction with the gameplay in order to create a sense of immersion.
I believe many people do not see games as an art form for two reasons:
1. The word "Game" has the stigmatism of being for fun, while art is not often viewed as a fun thing to enjoy.
2. When most people think "Game", they think more of Call of Duty, Mario and Gears of War as opposed to artistic games like Heavy Rain or SotC, or even games that allow you to make your own art like Spore or Minecraft/Terraria.
defenitely for so many reasons. beautiful graphic is just like a painting. beatiful cutscenes are just like a movie. the so many beautiful soundtracks are just like any other music and the wonderful story is just like any book. i think its not just art but many different types of art in one thing
Of course videogames are art. They are a lot of different types of art, put into one, and then you can interact with it. Take Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion for example. You can walk around, go up in the mountains to see snow, look at the tree line, find ruins of temples, If you don't think that is art, then I don't know what is. Also, join any online server with a decent community in minecraft, or look up videos. People make their own art there.
Art has never really been a specific word. In a sense, yes, video games are art, as they're basically moving pictures that are controlled by an individual for the most part.
Really, I find this question unnecessary. It's not what about a video game is. It's why you play it that matters.
Well there are some video games that are artisticly oriented like ICO, Shadow of The Colosus the newest artistic game is El Shadie: Asension to Metatron both it got love scores so nothing
