When I first set my eyes on the gaint ship I thought I would be sleeping in my own
room. Turns out I was terribly wrong I was cramed between two people. My shoulders
touching the persons next to me. When I looked around I saw we were all chained
together. The next thing I thought of was were was the bathrooms?
After being abored the ship for three weeks shoulder to shoulder and swimming in are
own feces I wanted out. The bad part was there was no "out". After another three weeks
I could feel the hot, muggy air it was almost suffocating. I knew I'd only be on the ship
two more weeks but so many people had died already I was afraid I would not make it.
Finally after the two weeks pasted we were let out. The sun burned my eyes as I
stepped out of the enormous ship. I knew I wasn't free..yet. So I made my way along
with the other slaves. I didn't really have a choice were to go we were still chained up
together.
As I was looking around I found a older man come infront of me. I woundered if he
was planning to buy me. As I was still thinking about what was happening I saw a middle
aged man unlocking the chains. I woundered for a second if I was being set free, but then
the older man pointed to a strange object on wheels with horses in the front.
After the man opened the carrage door and I looked around and saw a very big house.
Then the man said "I am Henry and you are my slave you are to call me master. Now go
over to that other slave." he pointed to a tall (black) man and continued."Thats David he will
show you how to farm and behave around here". After my master was finished talking I started
walking to the tall man my master pointed to.
When I met this man he told me how to farm and what upsets master o' Henry as the
his slaves call him. He lead me to the basement and I met the other slaves Kelvin,John.and
Annie. They started talking about escaping and getting free. I asked what they ment escape?
John replied "we have been planning to get out of here for quite some time now your welcome
to join us". David went on to explain it was hard getting or organizing escapes because the
other slaves spoke so many different languages.
Next morning I saw Annie and Kelvin come in with blood down there back. Then master
came in and slammed a book down on the table that had been in his hands. I jumped and
asked David what had happened. He said Kelvin half followed the master's order, the master
had told him to feed the horse so Kelvin fed the horse a little to much feed. Annie had been
caught reading the master's daughter's book. He said "see were not allowed to read or write
around here".
That night David said that whipping was a crule way of punishing a slave and that the
white men sould be whipped themselves. Annie said that she thought it was unfair slaves
couldn't read or write. Kelvin wished he could leave the plantation to see his friends and his
younger brother. I wished you could run away and be caught and not have to go through
whippings. I found it horrible to see blood dripping down my friends backs.
Annie fought agianst the code by reading to other slaves in her free time,of corse she
did it very secretly. Kelvin fought against the codes by sneaking out to were his brother was
held a slave, of corse he had been caught and whipped several times. I was so glad that we
were trying to fight back in are own little way. David said he would like to run away still but
he dicided to stay because it scared him the thought of being caught and the thought of being
whipped as hard as master could do.
The next morning before David left for the feilds he ask were I had come from and how long it took for me to come here. David said he had been rasied by his mother and born here on masters farm. I told him I hadn't been born a slave and that i traveled from Guinea to Brazil and that it took me near 8weeks to get to Brazil. I also told him what the did to us on the trip and how tightly we were crammed in.
David said he was glad I had been chosen to come live with him. I wasn't so glad two months ago when I had first come but now I feel at home. The master has permitted us to be married.
