The problem isn't the eyes, it is the general proportions. They are, as you noted, a bit close together, as well as too high on the face. A bit turned to the side as well, while the rest of the face is facing straight forward. It is not a big problem, it is just a matter of practice and observation. As far as I can see, you were looking down a little for most of it, perhaps besides the nose, the eyes then is put at a place as if you are looking up, but without actually having the eyes gain that proportion. The ears seem to fit that same conclusion.
well, not everyone can have some kind of natural talent about proportions. If I may: Paint edits, woot!
Anyway, can't make much out of the first one (thought it would most likely be widely popular in any modern art group), and clowns kinda creepy me out. But the colours are used quite well. And I think the effective width is around 640-670 pixels.
