As for video games that are tower defense games, I have only ever seen one and I can't remember the name of it.

Orcs Must die! is a good twist on a tower defence game and its really good fun too.

Defence Grid : awakening is pretty good fun too.

Plants Vs. Zombies is the best actual tower defence game. It's the only one that doesn't have me falling asleep as it progresses.
