I know this maybe a bit old but I still fail to understand why a lot people hate the game so much. Some say there was no romantic element to it like in the others but that's a petty reason. Others seem to say the story was a bit too political but then I think of FF7's story and that was shinra using the resources too much which bloomed into a chase for a madman, to me that sounds very 'conserve the earth type crap, then let's all go after some lunatic because he's attempting to cleanse the planet'. Others say the story wasn't based around the characters that much but then Basch was the guard of the king that was going to sign the treaty at the start of the game. Ashe who was meant to be the Queen of Dalmasca that would end the war between the 2 warring nation. Balthier the son of Dr. Cid (i would elaborate but it's clear his connection regarding his history as well). Also BGM in the story is phenomenal and beautiful. Just don't understand the hatred for this game...
Numino, no offense but you come off as a rabid FF12 defender/fanboy, which is why I'm not going to actually speak to you in this post.
Instead I'll be addressing why Final Fantasy in general has been going southward.
The first few Final Fantasies (1 - 6; In America: only 1, 4, and 6 came out) were superb games. Admittedly today they do not hold up well - and that's mainly because they've set the industry standard for a good RPG and so gamers have become accustomed to everything they've seen in these games; thus, they appear mediocre to the modern gamer.
Final Fantasy 7 was arguably where the series began going downward, but most ignored it because it was a jump to 3D and a complete re-imagining of the series and its mechanics, so they gave it some slack.
But as the games went on, we began to realize that each successive title was getting worse and worse. I can't speak for the spin-offs like the Dissidia series, as I've never played them, but the main series has been steadily deteriorating. The release of FF13 confirmed this with many mainstream critics as well as gamers. The games' stories were getting better, but the actual GAMEPLAY was becoming boring and sub-par for the RPG genre. I guess it's just because western and eastern gamers have different tastes, but I honestly find it hard to believe that the FF series is still popular in Japan, unless maybe gamers there enjoy story more than gameplay (a valid opinion, but not one shared by most western gamers).
For me it wasn't the story it was the game play. I will give SquareEnix some credit, they did a great job creating a better battle system than that crappy turn based system that just broke flow. But over all this just turned the game into trekking across a giant field, then a long cut scene. Then trekking across another giant field, then a cut scene. It just got old after the first couple of fields for me. Even if the graphics and visuals are mind blowing.
i'd say far too many fanboys ruined the game, criticising it too much, this led to its eventual demise and being dubbed 'horrible' amongst other colloquial title. the game was brilliant, the story was albeit complex but gave a great insight into an evil ruler's mind, the soundtrack was beyond phenomenal.
If this game was given the same fanboy attention as FF7 then it wouldn't've been sub classed, there many people out there that would prefer other FF's than 7 ( I myself prefer 8 & 12). This game was ruined by the extreme hatred of others that managed to dissuade others from playing it.
i dont understand you. your saying that because 7 was overated 12 was underated? many people just love 8-10 and you just have to understand that different people have different taste. for me the most important thing in a game is the story and this is why i found 12 boring.

i dont think so. from what ive experienced (myself and the internet) the series started to go down with 12 (i dont even bother to mention 11).

no actually the series hit a downward slump with 13 not 12, 12 was widely criticised because of its complex storyline, 13 was widely criticised because it wasn't played out like a RPG game.
Well I guess people hate it mainly for reason how much different it is (okay I based this just on watching gameplay on youtube mabe it is bad - for which console is it avaible? I might consider getting it.)
I've played only FF:XII revenant wings on NDS which is actually pretty much fun( though the fact that enemies are 10 levels higher than you are sucks)

they both got criticized though. the fact that you think the reason for 12 being critsized isnt fair means nothing. the first game that got bad (and by that i mean REALLY bad) opinions was 12.

show me these opinions, i would love to know the root of these statements
why? you just stated yourself that ff12 is universally hated. why not just accept the fact that most people dont like it. you think that disliking that game is some kind of trend? but just for you:
again. you should just deal with the fact that many people dislike it and that it isnt as loved as most of the other games in the series. i think you should stop defending the game from people who say its a bad game as a fact because they just arent worth it and you make it seem as if your one of those people who say that ff12 being a good game is a fact. its all about opinions and there is no point in arguing why people dont like it
