The key to Paradise As Alrik crept into the cold kitchens he bumped into Ivar the cat. But thankfully he didn't meow. He moved stealthily to the bread cubbard. As he eased the stone door open he thought he heard a noise and thankfully it was just Ulfrik his best friend coming down to share the snack. âHey Alrik I heard you go down so I decided that I should come to just in case you got caught.â âYou came down for the food didn't you. Well yeah but you couldn't finish that whole loaf by yourself.â âI guess I could share but don't let the other boys hear of this or we will be surely mobbed.â As they crept back to the servant quarters they ran into the old cook Inga. âNow what are you boys doing up at such an hour? We were just umm... going to the out house. Oh you were now, if you need any food just ask me after dinner and I can give you extra.â âOh well we will keep that in mind.â That was close Alrik. Inga would never tell the Lord Thrain that we were sneaking around. I hope your right. Night Ulrik. Night. Give me half the loaf and don't let anybody see you. Here. Thanks. As Alrik was finishing the half of his loaf he remembered the stories that his mother told him about rolling green hills and an Island called the emerald isle. Thats where she was from. She had been so kind. He hadn't seen his mother in 2 years. 2 years of servants work for Lord Thrain. 2 years of beatings and loneliness. He was pretty sure he couldn't make without Ulfrik and late night snacks. He turned to his side on the straw cot trying to get the quilt to cover his whole body from the chilly wind blowing from under the window. He felt sleepy and he sang the songs his mother used to sing until he drifted into dreamland.
Chapter two âforgotten dreamsâ Alrik was running from Lord Thrain and he felt like he was dragging a weight behind him but Lord Thrain was changing into a giant then Alrik saw a cottage get crushed by Lord Thrain and he heard a woman screaming and a man yelling to get out. He woke up with cold sweat pouring down his body. He knew that he had a nightmare last night but he couldn't remember what it was. He saw the light in the window and knew it was time to get up. As he got dressed he recalled bits and pieces of the dream. He had seen a giant destroying something but who the giant was he had no idea. When he got to the mess hall he saw Ulfrik sitting with Thialfi. He joined their table and Inga the cook served him the meager serving of porridge. As he ate he noticed that their was no talk in the hall that morning just a forlorn silence. He decided to break the silence. Hey Thialfi how is your warrior training going. As the words left his mouth the guards grabbed him by the arm and dragged him away. Hey what are you doing with me. Lord Thrain just announced that we were not to talk at the mess hall and since you slept in you didn't hear him. I truly didn't mean to sir. Tell that to Lord Thrain not me.
