Are lightining bugs dissapearing? read the article. I know that personally, I've noticed far fewer around then when I was a kid (I'm 24).

Do you agree that there are fewer around? What do you think is the cause, light pollution, development, global warming?

It's a tragedy if lightining bugs truly are going extinct. They were, not to sound corney, a magical part of my childhood. I'd hate to see them dissapear forever.

That's one of the animals I would hate to see extinct.

They are magic for a kid really.

I can't open your link, but I would hate to see them disappear also. Why are they disappearing exactly?

The report sites several reasons which may be the cause of their dissaperance: human development into their habitat, light poultion caused, global warming.

So?

I mean really, how do they help me or benefit me in any way?

This was happening with bees a couple months ago...It probably still is, but it just moved down the media's coverage list.

And Ricador, if one species disappears, a whole ecosystem could become unstable.

Well i am aware of that, but Fire Flies really don't have that big of an impact.

Bees however have a huge impact...

Maybe not just from thinking about it. I'm going to do some research and see what role they play in nature.

I think it's funny that we care so much about this critter because we have such fond memories, but who cares about all the other thousands of endangered animals that we have nothing to do with? Every animal has an impact on the world. Every animal eats, and gets eaten (within reason) and has an effect on the food chain. Yes, it's sad that fireflies are dying out, as well as tigers, wolves, and every other animal that humans have trampled the lifestyles of.
