I should say Mario. He's great, the main character, useful powers, and he's my favorite. I use him in this game, Melee, and the other game in the Nintendo 64.
When it comes to useful moves against high-level CPUs, Samus isn't your best choice. All she can do is shoot some photon blast which you can see coming from a mile away; and a controllable missile that does almost as much damage as a punch, which most of you know is not very much.
