well i read online its only legal if you actually own the game but then whats the point of downloading if you all rdy own it XD

So if say my computer crashed and I can't play CoD4 anymore (I should have gotten it off steam :P), I can download it and its not illegal.

I think it is because your stealing from the company, and you get the virus on your computer. It's not even worth it. Just buy the game.

Depends on the game. Some games are free downloads, but cost money to activate and play.
Other games are free downloads AND free plays, but will require you to pay money to 'unlock' bigger parts of the game and/or extras.
Some games even require you to physically buy it (and get an activation key), then download the biggest part from the internet to be able to play.

Don't ask yourself 'Is it free? Then it is probably illegal.'
but 'Is it free? Are other people paying for the same thing as I am? Then it is probably illegal.'

It is unless you're downloading a free trial that the website pays for.

IF ITS FREE THEN ITS LEGAL

so if you rob a jewelry store and you dont pay for the jewelry, would that make it legal?
