The teachers want us to do homework so that we won't forget what they just told us by going on armor games or another kind of website like that and forget.
Of course homework is stupid, but necessary. Otherwise how else would they make sure you're learning? Plus, some classes like math can't always be learned just by watching someone write out problems on the board and doing a couple on your own. Like writing, most people can't read a book and suddenly write an epic novel of awesomeness, unless you were ub3r good at it from the start, of course :P.

High schools focus so much on giving out enough homework to students that they learn something, which results in many people being completely over encumbered by boredom and exhaustion. I'm one of those people, sadly.
I think homework is ok as long as a school is focusing on the needs of the student, not the needs of the school "insecure-mothers" board; full of people who think more homework is the answer to dropping grades.
Grade school should last only 6 hours a day, not 7 or 8. This will give kids more free time to enjoy their short lasting childhood. This way, an hour homework won't seem like it's as big a deal.
High school shouldn't last more than 7 hours. High schools today focus so much on making sure the students are safe and learning enough that they not only take what little freedom teenagers have, but they also increase the amount of work that they must do. This is retarded, because it only makes people hate learning. This is why so many smart people fail their classes.
Homework should only be piled onto a good education system, not the current one.
Homework is deffinatly needed but i just wish that all schools would have a study hall, so people don't have that much homework to bring home. I also hate all the papers that teachers make you write at home.
Homework is indeed stupid. Teachers give u a no life task (aka homework) cause we didnt learn enough in class? And all the homeworks are like doing the same thing at school, but at home. People do homework very fast (maybe they didnt understand something(no help) or they wanna finish it fast to do other things), so it wont help. I think homework should be given out only if the student wants to learn extra or work on something he/she didnt get.
LIke today for example. 10 pages of Biology homework.
Took me three hours. Thats a bit extreme. On top of studying for midterms, and homeowrk/projects for othercalsses.....Its ridiculous.
This si the reason I hate school. It isn't learning, it is the fact that every thinks we need work to keep us from shooting each other. Well thats so many teenagers smoke/drink/use violance, becuse there bored, and annoyed with how things are.
While this is totally irrelavent, the fact that fighting is now illegal in schools is total BULL****! Kids can't just settle things that need settled between them selves. NOw these kids that get picked on, shoot people after years and years of being picked on. While before they could fight back.
I'm pretty sure you guys know the real reason of having homework but really....? 10 pages of Biology homework? I heard some kids had to right essays for their Biology class, that's crazy. Blablabla homework is stupid, everyone gets that. But look at it this way, the more homework you were assigned, the more homework your teacher has to grade to record. So uhh, punish your teacher :P
if you dont do your homework you will not get a good job and that means you will not be able to get stuff you want like xbox/ games.
It's possible, they could be a prodigy of some sort and do something revolutionary that would 'void' the fact they failed every class in High School...like creating a warp drive for spaceships, I doubt people would care for that F when you present mankind with a way to travel to the furthest reaches of the galaxy =).
This is why so many smart people fail their classes.

Homework isn't really stupid, what's stupid is the amount and kind some schools are giving. Take my history and math classes, for example. They make us take notes on sections at home, why? We can't just read the book, for some reason. In my History class, we're just supposed to take notes until we fill up two pages, which ends up being only half the section! It's useless.
@skater Some people just beat the crap out of others for no reason, though, which isn't right. Fighting to get rid of some of that instant anger and frustration with no serious harm in mind is one thing, but people take it a little far and beat people until they're permanently damaged...
So uhh, punish your teacher :P
