Ok, I stand corrected then... maybe it's my lack of experience with other forae, or maybe it's just my age being the problem here... I personally just don't see any benefits of using sigs and that might have clouded my judgement on the matter! =P

There isn't much benefit other than a short bio of yourself. And you can write funny stuff in them, while sort of getting excused for it.
I see this in many forums who have sigs:

Signature moderation. I believe the moderation will moderate it. Chat logs are awfully long.
The inclusion of signatures should accompany a graphical and layout overhaul of the boards if there is one. Looks rather horrible including them into the current layout.
