I never needed to prepare to pull off all-nighters really. I just jumped in and played video games all night. Probably the only thing right now that would draw me to not sleep all night. I also usually drink carbonated beverages with caffeine, and I don't notice the energy boost.
I went 21 hours once... But my dad made me go to bed after he woke up seeing me eating cereal, at 7:30 in the morning.
I've pulled longer than you, mine being 36 hours. If I didn't go to sleep on that airplane I took back in January, it'd be just over fifty hours.
I'll try for sixty sometime, when I can. Though I probably won't unless I have a good reason to, like Firefly.

I think the biggest factor is sheer will power, combined with us being unable to sleep due to a lack of a place to stay. You can always find stuff to do to keep you awake. Plus we had regular meals, so we'd have an energy boost for about an hour after each meal. Needless to say though, it was horrible. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a really good reason to do so.
Yes, sheer willpower is essential. I believe one will have more will to stay awake for extended periods, if one is in a situation which pressures him/her to do so. Like the one Firefly found himself in.
The only reason I stayed awake for around 40 hours straight (would of been fifty if I didn't for two hours on the way to Sydney) sleep on the second plane ride) was because I was travelling 8500 km and it was very important that I did not doze off, due to the circumstances. Surprisingly, I didn't feel too tired at all to be honest. When I arrived in the house after two days, I didn't collapse immediately. I figure the excitement kept me awake, though I did have a lot of food, which sustained me.

Yeah, I only plan on doing it voluntarily, once. I wouldn't have the free time to in years.
I've survived an all nighter by drinking loads of coffee + tea, and also staring at a computer screen (school assessment). What i didn't know was that there was a in class essay the next day, i basically fell asleep as soon as it started =.="
My longest time awake was somewhere between 60 and 72 hours, however I can't remember the last 12 hours so I don't know when I crashed. I do know that I crashed while walking through my house and hit my head on the floor, when I woke up I had a horrible headache. Also while I still pull all nithers from time to time, I never go beyond about 36 hours EVER.
well, longest ive done was 2 hours, went to my bestfriends b-day party, went paintballing, staid up all night playing the 360, hung out the rest of that day, then staid up all that night once again playing vdeo games. then went home and went to bed.
Drugs. And alcohol. LOL. In reality, I can do an all nighter just by listening to my music or being on this site. It's not that hard. I usually stay up pretty late every day.
Alcohol makes you sleepy. But when combined with drugs, it's just a drink. And if it's cold enough, and you splash it on your face, you'll definitely feel wide awake. =P
all the way baby! xDD i do the same thing, except, i crash at 6:30... in the morning, and i had to wake up, i did this two weekends, i had to wake up at 11:00... not very much sleep. lol, i was in a bad mood for 2 days... lol
