So I recently just started going into astronomy, and I was wondering whether you guys believe that the universe was open, closed or flat?

I like to think of the universe as closed, but I'm still wondering what happens if you stick your hand out of the "end" of the universe. Either way, the universe is going to hit a apocalyptic end D:

I believe that the universe is an open ever-expanding thing. And yes I do believe that the Universe will come to an apocalyptic end trillions of years in the future do to the Big Rip. (teehee)

Why exactly do you think that?

Well, it seems to me that if the Big Bang theory is indeed correct, it's logical that the universe to be expanding at an ever-increasing rate.

Just read a bit of the Universe wiki page and my mind has been blown, now I might get into astronomy when I grow up.

astronomy when I grow up.

I've always been interested in Astronomy, just not sure if I want to take classes on it in High School.

My school don't got that. I'm actually more interested in like the universe, and infinity, and light speed, teleportation and what not. Like the almost impossible or impossible stuff. But I guess that's like mathematician/scientist/astronomer. lol

The universe is open (in my opinion, i dunno if there is evidence), so like Earth, if you stick your hand over one side of the universe, it will appear on the other side

Open sounds more likely, or it's just constantly growing and seems endless, unless you get to a speed that's faster than the speed the universe grows. Then you end up in Limbo. XD

Actually, Mage provided a curious link that suggests the universe is flat..

I'm amazed they are able to figure things like these out! I ought to read up on this after my final tomorrow.

How stupid! Everyone knows the universe is round, what is this, the 1600's?!

Then you should read the link and be "stupid-ified" :P

They thought the earth was flat. Now we know the earth is round and the universe is flat!

More like since all know laws of physics are theoretically constrained to your universe you hand will just break down into the base ... parts?
Also it might not even be possible to reach the edge or get past it.

They thought the earth was flat.

Misconception most people knew it was round. It's obvious really and they were even able to calculate the circumference with some sticks and shadows.

We now know that the universe is flat with only a 2% margin of error.

The link explains quite well why scientist consider the universe flat.

The link goumas13 posted makes mention of this. But here it is for you to see for yourself. The microwave background radiation as it is and below three models of what it would look like depending on the shape of the universe. As you can see it best matches the flat universe.

Here's another image of the MBR to better compare the models to.
