My favorite video game character is Dante from Dante's Inferno. He has to battle through Hell to save the woman he loves and along the way he realizes that it was his own fault that Beatrice and he were there the whole time. At the end of the game he admits his folly and just wants Beatrice to be absolved. Then he defeats Satan/the Devil against all odds and absolves himself.
