I know this maybe a bit old but I still fail to understand why a lot people hate the game so much. Some say there was no romantic element to it like in the others but that's a petty reason. Others seem to say the story was a bit too political but then I think of FF7's story and that was shinra using the resources too much which bloomed into a chase for a madman, to me that sounds very 'conserve the earth type crap, then let's all go after some lunatic because he's attempting to cleanse the planet'. Others say the story wasn't based around the characters that much but then Basch was the guard of the king that was going to sign the treaty at the start of the game. Ashe who was meant to be the Queen of Dalmasca that would end the war between the 2 warring nation. Balthier the son of Dr. Cid (i would elaborate but it's clear his connection regarding his history as well). Also BGM in the story is phenomenal and beautiful.
Just don't understand the hatred for this game...

i do and i hated it too. the story was just too boring for me. almost nothing happened and when something happened it wasnt interesting. i felt that there was no emotion in the story and that this game focuses on gameplay only. i was really disapointed of this game and honestly i was really happy when i finally finished it and could shove it to the back of my game collection XP.

I gave it it's appreciative play-through and I wasn't impressed by the battle system, I couldn't stand letting my characters run on auto with the gambits. The story was dry, the characters were poorly tied together and/or poorly acted? They had no feeling and the main character was hard to root for and play as because he is tragically annoying.

not one of you has bothered to explain how the story was 'dry' or 'boring'. pathetic

could you explain to me why you like certain types of food? its based on likes and dislikes. and medpack did give a pretty good explanation.

in my opinion the characters were good but were stuck in a boring story. the game itself told the story like a history class instead of the points of view of the characters and the only character that actually had any point of view was ashe. i like pretty much every character (even the bad bangaa) but it just felt as if after the first 10 minutes of the game nothing subjective happened.

in ff7 though, each character has his own deep story (usually) and i felt close to each and every one of them (accept caith sith).

defending something you like from people who just dont like it is pathetic and its better to accept the fact that most people didnt connect to the game.

Methinks the problem was with your reading rather than what they wrote.

Anyways, personally, I think that one of the main reasons why it is so criticized is that it is so well-known and it's the twelfth freaking game in the series. No game has higher expectations than a Final Fantasy game.

i dont think its because its the 12th. i mean, some newer ff games are considered better then some older ff games. i dont think any game series has a 10 in its name yet ff10 is one of my all time fav games (and im sure many will agree). havnt played 13 yet (hopefully i will) and i do expect to like it at least more then 12. honestly, its not that i didnt like 12 as much as i liked the others, i didnt like it AT ALL and i wouldnt mind if that game would disapear from my memory XP

i'd say far too many fanboys ruined the game, criticising it too much, this led to its eventual demise and being dubbed 'horrible' amongst other colloquial title. the game was brilliant, the story was albeit complex but gave a great insight into an evil ruler's mind, the soundtrack was beyond phenomenal.

If this game was given the same fanboy attention as FF7 then it wouldn't've been sub classed, there many people out there that would prefer other FF's than 7 ( I myself prefer 8 & 12). This game was ruined by the extreme hatred of others that managed to dissuade others from playing it.

I never played it because I heard it was bad.

I don't even want to try it, because I dislike the direction they are taking the FF Series in

You heard it was bad, so you didn't even bother to see for yourself whether it really fits that description. That is just sad, its quite amazing to see how easily you can be persuaded by strangers...

I don't really care. I wasn't that interested in the first plac

As I previously stated, I don't like the direction the series is going in, so it didn't take a lot of convincing for me to not get the game

again why doesn't anybody not actually try it before judging it, instead following the crowd like a sheep

Games cost money. If you had to pick between buying a game with good reviews, and buying a game with bad reviews, you're more likely to be satisfied if you buy the first one.

Also, I'm sure people would be more willing to discuss this with you or answer your questions if you didn't insult them.

I only insult because of people's behaviour mirrors that of a sheep.

The game had great reviews but I gather you are referring to the reviews in forums instead of the critics reviews. Am sure this will show you the tremendous qualities this game garnered upon its release and post release.
