I heard this on either Colbert Report or Daily Show, neither of which are reliable, but the person who was interviewed was. He is the most popular newscaster for hispanic news, and the most watched newscaster in new york city, if that gives perspective. he claimed that by the year 2108 at the current rate of immigration and reproduction caucasians would be outnumbered by hispanics.
do you think that is a possibility? do you think it's a problem? can anyone even argue that America isn't as much for hispanics as caucasians? what nationality does America really belong to?
Plus most everything here has an alternative Spanish translation. The only thing that irks me is the part of Spanish people talking to you when they know you aren't Spanish.
The MAJORITY language is English. Not the OFFICIAL language.
There can be no such thing as an official language in America. English is just the language that has the majority of people using. There can be no official language if there is Spanish too, and other translations used commercially. Like ATM machines and the Cash Register where you buy your food. If only English was used, it would be devistating for people that don't speak English. Granted they should have English lessons, having English for all Ethnicities isn't going to happen any time soon.
Each state has an official language. The country as a whole, however, does not. The only state to have two official languages is New Mexico; it's second official language is Spanish. I think Texas has been pushing for it, but the state legislature won't allow it.
No he means whatever the constitution says the language is Still English.
Which hes wrong of course. Like I said its practically impossible for USA to have an official language since there are different ethnicities immigrating here. (is it immi or emmi for comming in..)
It is a valid point to note that an increasing number of government forms are now billingual containing both spanish and english. I think it's a rather intresting transtition that we're seeing as spanish speaking latin americans are slowly becoming the majority.
Numbers like this are thrown around a lot, it seems to me. And it assumes that things will stay on the same trends that they are currently on, and that rarely seems to happen. So it could happen, but will it? And if it does, on that date? And to me, it doesn't matter. The only people who can make a strong argument for belonging to this country are those who were first here, before the European explorers started wiping them out. And that includes people of Mexican descent. Immigration seems to be a normal and natural thing, anyhow, so I'm all for it. Sure, there will be growing pains, but that's not always a bad thing.
I don't know if it is possible, but I do think that our southern border needs some patchwork. I have no doubt that mexicans are shuttling in here by the hundreds every day. Personally, I think that we need a better armed border patrol with a license to kill. I also think that we need a wall built, but it will take congress 20 years to debate it, then 20 more years to decide what color to paint it. I think that we will never fix the border. Just another problem with the USA.
like it or not pyro has a point...
That is because using America's exchange rate (even in these times), one US dollar is like ten pesos. Mexicans work their asses of to bring over their families. My problem is that, constitution rights or not, America's official language is English, and it ticks me off when they can't speak a word of English. Furthermore, there are too many mexicans coming in at once, and they aren't citizens, so they don't have to pay taxes.
