No, that is ridiculous. You mess up in a plane, you go doun. You mess up in a car, 7 people go down. You mess up in a plane, you have 3,000 feet to catch yourself You mess up in a car well... Your engine fails in a plane, you glide to earth. Your engine fails on earth you crash. Anybody can get a licence, but a pilot's licence takes hours of flight time. In a car, there is no control tower...
I agree that planes are safer. 1 in every 125 persons on this earth will die in a car crash, but it's like 1 in 400,000 will die in a place crash. But your logic is what I am arguing.

But if you mess up a plane, 200 people go down.
You mess up in a plane, you have 3,000 feet to catch yourself You mess up in a car well...
Most plane problems cannot be solved. I've messed up in my car many times and was able to recover.
Your engine fails in a plane, you glide to earth. Your engine fails on earth you crash.
Nope. If an engine explodes on a plane, you're dead. If your engine fails on a car, you "glide."
As a pilot myself I'd like to personally reassure anyone with any doubts over air travel, at least compared to cars in this instance.
Your engine fails in a plane, you glide to earth.
It depends on the type of engine failure, although most of the time it occurs due to fuel contamination. In the case of an airliner, using the RAM turbine would give the pilot enough hydraulic pressure to instigate a successful deadstick landing, that is of course if the terrain is suitable. Don't be fooled by in flight videos. Planes don't land on water, they crash on water. Last year's Hudson event was an extremely rare case.
Your engine fails on earth you crash.
If your engine fails in a car, then you just put your foot on the brakes and call the AA. Simple no?

That's actually a myth. There are numerous events pilots are trained to handle. Before pilots are allowed to fly, they have to pass simulation tests in which they have to combat 5 random simultaneous failures. I would go into more detail, but there are literally thousands of different things that could go wrong, give me something specific and I'll let you know how it could be fixed.

Engine failure refers to one or more engines stopping in their tracks. Engine fires very rarely occur, and normally do so due to static charge or a fuel transfer malfunction of some sort.
Barring a terrorist attack of some sort, probably the biggest danger to jet aircraft would be birds flying into the turbine. That happens, you are in big trouble.
But really most qualified pilots are drilled enough to know what to do. Before I could fly solo, I had to memorise the 900 page manual on my aircraft for a written and verbal test. The pass mark was 95%. Certain failures, the most serious ones are known as 'red pages'. The pass mark for these pages is 100%. That's how rigorous pilot training regimes are, so don't worry guys.
Cars kill way more people than planes every year. Only difference is cars offer higher survivability, while planes, if they go down, you're in it for the long haul. Or, more accurately short haul.

Something tells me that we're talking about civilian planes, not military.
I agree that planes are safer. 1 in every 125 persons on this earth will die in a car crash, but it's like 1 in 400,000 will die in a place crash.
How many people travel by car and how many travel by plane at any moment? More people at the wheel means bigger probability of something going wrong. Plus any fool can have drivers license but not anyone can drive a commercial plane.
your probably right, since the number of people in car crashes adds up to more dead people than those who have crashed on a plane. but think about it, planes don't crash very often, but when they do it is BAD. besides, in a car, you'd be lucky to destroy a house. in a plane, you could take on structures like the twin towers (a moment of silence XD)
Still, I have to commit to my one true love, the GAU-8 Avenger cannon =P
It is a sexy weapon indeed. As hardware goes, my one and only true love is the Paveway 1000 pounder.

It's a great show. I am actually serving in the sqn in question. This documentary was made a few years before I got there though. I missed my chance to get a taste of fame. Still, they are making a new documentary late next year when we get equipped with the F35s, so stay tuned!
