Years Sports Were First Played:

Gaelic Football: 1300's
Rugby: 1750

Make sure you know what you're talking about before you say something.

I think he meant it in terms of Contact sports. In which he is correct. I mean seriously he would have to be an idiot to think hurley or hockey came from rugby. Should have kind of taken that less literally.

You all know how I feel about rugby. For those of you who don't, I'll tell you right now. I hate it!

"American" football takes more skill to play, it has more rules, and the players are much better protected. Now don't go saying, "Oh, those Americans are whimps because they use padding", because that isn't true. We use it because it protects us from serious injuries. I'm sure more people have died playing rugby than playing football.

"American" football takes more skill to play

Yes, I know a lot of rugby players make fun of our foward pass, but it is harder, plus you got to read the defense.

I also love the names of football plays and schemes: bootleg, shotgun, wishbone, pistol, hail mary, blitz, statue of liberty, iso, option, slants, fades, screens, draws, fumble rooskie, power I, dive, and wild cat. Just naming a few of course.

Rugby has scrum, hooker, maul, ruck, and flyhalf...

I have played some times rugby and I have watched some games and I have to say that's a great sport. I think that rugby is better than American football. Rugby is more real.

It would be better if you call it hand egg.

I love that picture XD

How is it harder.... If your playing Rugby and you want to pass it you can either look behind you; and in doing so take your eyes off the 6 odd foot giant running towards you... ot you can throw the ball blindly and probably loose it. It takes alot of skill to pick out a pass.

I think it is strange that several arguments have been about American Football being more complex.... coming from a country that has NASCAR >.> lol (even if it is only in parts) (then again we have Morris Dancing XD)

I already told you, you have to read the defense! Fro man cover age to zone coverage. Having a blitz in your face. The foward pass is harder to be accurate with than tossing it behind you.

What? Oooooooooooo you are one of the ones that think NASCAR is only about driving in circles, well that is so ignorant I won't even get into it. Oh, but there is a reason why drivers from other leagues suck when it comes to competing in NASCAR.

And it is the whole country, not just parts.

And American football also failed badly when they copyied Rugby because they called it football, foot+ball. It would be better if you call it hand egg.

Really? Because they kick the ball almost every time they change possession, they kick it to score 3 points, they kick it after they score a touchdown....

It isn't harder to thrwo a ball forward than it is too throw it behind you.

But vice versa NASCAR drivers can "suck" when they get into another series' car. An don't assume stuff about me I know it is more than that... and most motorsport is driving in sircles at the end of the day most have circuits though, granted, NASCAR does have generally less corners. I love that NASCAR has very different values to say... F1.

I hate the name but at the end of the day American Football is in the football family of games; just the same as Aussie Rules is football. Margaret thatcher is apparently classed as a human being :P but its about perspective. >.>

Ever watched a game of Rugby?

Anyway, I have to say that Rugby in my opinion is better than American football.

Rugby, to me is more challenging.. as in you cant throw the ball to the other end of the field. (But you have to be pretty skilled to do that!)

You have to pass behind, looking for support as well as having an opposing player run at you. (also like in American Football but in American Football you can pass anywhere)

If you have the right team and pratice you can easily have people saying Rugby has alot more tactic than Amercian Football (also Visa-versa)

So I guess my opinion on this changes, as they both have their strenghts and their weak parts.

But I still like Rugby over all because it is our "national sport"

American football totally owns! But I won't be like Ernie and try to criticize everyone with an opposite opinion, because non-Americans will never understand how seriously we take this sport.

because non-Americans will never understand how seriously we take this sport.

ut that is the same with everything.... (people in America will never understand how important the FA Cup is too England... I'll never understand how important the mass is to RC's etc.)

Sorry, it just seemed like you were going down that road. I won't get in to NASCAR anymore since this thread isn't even about NASCAR.

Generally throwing it forward is harder, since in American Football you don't usually have a defender behind you, but now that I look at it again I can see that a backward pass is defended more in rugby.

I've seen both, but only played football. I respect both but I prefer American Football. The reason why I prefer American Football to Rugby is because:

1. I grew up with football
2. I've played it from middle school to high school
3. Like being able to run complex plays

Things that amazes me are that a lot of people like that there's no pads in Rugby, and think that Amer. Football is a wimpy game because they take timeouts and rest in between plays, and because of that Rugby is a "mans" game. I'd rather like to know that my body is going to be protected from hard hits rather than breaking a shoulder or sternum, hip or leg. The reason why there's breaks in between is because of play calling. Pads and breaks for play calling doesn't make for a "wimpy" game it makes for a good strategic game were players can hit as hard as they can and know that they're protected and don't have to worry about getting seriously injured.
