The M4 carbine, or any of the AR-15 family (M-16's) would not be my choice because:
5.56 NATO round. Low stopping power, small wound channel. The US Army has encountered this issue in Somalia, with combatants being high on drugs and taking 10 to 15 rounds to the torso before going down.
The AR design uses direct gas blowback operation allowing rapid fouling of the firing chamber and action, meaning you're get a hard jam and be overrun.
A better choice would actually be an AK-47. (H&K G3 would be nice except it's got a nasty recoil).
7.62X39 mm round is a nice fat bullet and has good ballistic properties for close range encounters, plus the recoil is not too bad. Accuracy is good enough for close range. The Kalashnikov design makes it near impossible to jam an AK-47 due to loose tolerances, meaning you can shoot longer and stay alive.
Read Black Hawk Down. (The book.) Actual accounts from the Rangers. The drug is called KHAT, and is chewed. Khat drastically increases pain tolerance, and because the 5.56 Nato rounds tend to pass right through at close range without much shock trauma, it is possible to continue to fight after taking a few hits to the torso, even if only for a few seconds. Where the 5.56 round really shines is against body armor.

High internal damage, low recoil, fast, quiet in comparison. And why on Earth are you aiming at the torso of a zombie? It will go through your skull, blow your brain up, and blast out the back.
But still, AR family is a no go. Not enough ammo, and only good for medium ranges. AK's aren't good either, do to recoil. It's manageable, but still a pain. Assault rifles in general aren't very good, except for a few.
My personal choice would be an M1 Garand carbine for medium to long ranges, M249 SAW for short to medium, M24 for long range, and a 20 gauge shotgun for close.

50 cal shells aren't cheap and fairly rare. Plus the Barret isn't made for anti-peronal use; it technically is an "anti-material weapon" meaning you should use it for penetrating tank armour.
AK47 is the best overall assault rifle in the world. Cheap to make, built to last, decent stopping power..... prefect for a zombie apocalypse

Mind the recoil, the short range, the low capacity. It's long, too. It would do, but certainly not the best. It can't be a sniper, it can't do close quarters with zombies very well, either. It works on people that are prone to surprise, but zombies are dead.
Yes however Ak's come in many versions short, long 7.62X39 cal or the 74 in 5.45X45
I would think the ammo to be a problem.Although it is commen a 5.56 would be better simply because it would be alot more easy to find being that its used by all law enforcement (to scav off dead cops). 5.56 (.223) also can hit at range much more effectivly. Although it has less stopping power your shooting zombies all you need is a head shot.
This being said I would choose for my weapon an H&k 416 or a Magpul Mesada both of which are by far the most reliable 5.56 rifles around.

If you can find a good scoped sniper rifle at long range fighting, that would be a great choice, such as shooting down zombies in the head while they try to overrun your shelter. A good melee weapon would be a farmer scythe, or a machete; fast, durable, and long-reached for fighting.
Things that you have to know. The virus that keeps the zombie a zombie is embedded in their brain. Shooting off their limbs won't stop a zombie in its tracks; they will do anything they could and stop at nothing to feast on you. Shots to the head and dismemberment of the skull will sever the link between the body and the virus, stopping the zombie.

I have a question about that. Lets say you got some kinda obsidian scythe, and you cut off a zombie's head with it. Can the zombie still bite at you? I mean, the brain is still in tact.... o-o
Best weapon against zombies
I have to say it'd be an assault rifle with a single fire setting, with a scope on it. Only reason for that is, from far away it'll still destroy the brain, and a sniper rifle wont do you much good up close. So a scoped assault rifle would give you the means to fight back without having to use a melle weapon. I'd say a scoped AK74.
