Desktop. Better at gaming, better for a stand-alone media center. Laptops are nice if you enjoy surfing the web wirelessly... from your bathroom while you're taking a crap.. but since I can do without the internet for a few minutes, I'd rather not pay premium prices for the 'conveinience' of hauling around a portable computer.
Every so often I miss the speed and memory of a desktop (and the mouse) but the convenience and the fact that my laptop is newer cancels that out. Laptops, in my mind are better in the end (cus you can always add a mouse).
I love my laptop. Portablilty, LCD 17in widescreen, hddvd disc drive, 8 usb ports, intel core 2 duo T5500 processor, 4 GB memory, hell yeah I love my laptop! A lot better than any desktop I've ever had or used.
Desktop. I'm a desktop fan, laptops are annoying. especially the touchpad. With desktop I have a bigger screen and access to a printer. Also, playing games in a desktop is easier then in a laptop.

Unless your desktop has a built-in printer that's a weird argument... (Not the bigger screen part, the printer part.)
Laptop all the way. It's just easier to sit comfortably with. Also a lot easier to lie down and use... I don't mind the touchpad part since my touchpad is awesome and I can always just hook up my tablet or a mouse if I need it... It's overall more practical.
And regarding the 'desktops are better for gaming', I have a MacBook, so that's not where the "gaming difficulties" set in. :P
