i'm confused. i learned that pi never ends but then some people say that a Japanese team of researchers found the value of pi and that it has 1.3511 trillion digits. who is right??? http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Does_pi_ever_end
Dudes, simple answer: Pi is an irrational number. That's all you needed to say.
Pi is an irrational number, which means that it has no end, and unless you guys have taken trig or calc, it's going to be rather hard to explain why, but you guys can try to wrap your head around this:
As has been said, Pi is an irrational number, and therefore it never terminates. The Japanese computer simply calculated Pi to a certain number of digits, which is a pretty respective level of accuracy. There's no way to compute the entire number, because the entire number is infinite, but by increasing the number of digits that are calculated, you increase the accuracy of the known value of Pi.
Also, to the person using the "hysics definition", significant figures really have nothing to do with irrational numbers or why they're infinite.
1.511 trillion digits sounds about right - I only know pi to 3.14159265359 off by heart (it's a little party trick of mine, being able to quote that off by heart) but 1.511 trillion digits, I doubt that could fit into anyone's memory.
