This is breaking news at CNN.com. Russia attacks Georgia (the country). The President of Georgia gives his thoughts and comments about this event in an interview with a CNN corespondent.

The President's video speach can be found here:

http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/world/2008/08/08/intv.saakashvili.cnn

The story can also be found here:

http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/08/08/georgia.ossetia/index.html#cnnSTCOther1

Just copy and paste the links in your search bar.

I suggest watching the video first and then read the story.

The whole conflict started with Russia attacking civilians. If indeed Russia makes this an official war against Georgia, then for sure it would prove to be Georgia's demise.

What are your thoughts and comments?

Six years ago, Russia and Georgia had intence arguements over territory in the country.

Ahh, like the Armenian and Azerbaijan conflict.

I think the war will continue. Kinda scared of the outcome.

Btw, Russia did not INVADE Georgia (referring to the title), yet...

My thoughts right now arent about the military outcome (surely a russian victory bar a miracle or outside intervention) but the effect this could have on the olympics. With both Russian and Georgian teams present it will be interesting to see if anything kicks off like when the Hungarian team had a fight with the Russian water polo team back when it was the Soviet Union.

Well actually we are using the Olympics to our advantage to help make peace between the countries. Our president(I'm referring to Americans in general)was seen talking to the Georgian President earlier during the opening ceremony's.

There is no way the Georgians will beat Russia in all out war.

Georgia can't do it alone, but if its allies come into play, then it will get big.

I'll try to keep you guys posted with some updates.

Georgia swears to fight down to the last man. It would be a bloody conflict.

There is a territory in Georgia called South Ossetia. The people there are ethnic Ossetians, and want to form their own country. Georgia opposes it, but Russia has supported Ossetians non-stop. Since 1991 Ossetian rebels have been attacking Georgian military targets in a bid for independence.

Last night Georgia surrounded the rebel capital and demanded they stop all attacks. Russia then invaded to push the Georgians out of South Ossetia. All sides have already been linked to massacres. The separatists have claimed that 1,400 civilians are dead, but they probably hyper-inflated that number. It's a tense situation as Russia has never had good relations with Georgia. There is no way the Georgians will beat Russia in all out war. I can only assume there will be a fragile peace agreement soon.

Well first off Drace you have to realize alot of people like me may not be familiar with the Armenian and Azerbaijan conflict. Also I'm not exactly sure who owned that territory, but I think your right, that it was Georgia that invaded the territory that they are fighting over.

@thelistman,this reminds me of when Texas wanted independence from Mexico, and America helped them. The only difference is that Texas became a State in America.

Also @ Drace, you make it sound like it will become the next WW3,even though that's probably not your intention.

The last thing we need is to have this go into a larger scale war. Russia in itself is a dominant super power. In my opinion Georgia and its allies stand a 32% chance of repelling the Russian forces.

hey the reason i think they attacked is because basically all our troops are out at war and only recruits and a handful of majors are here.

The US is an ally, but I don't think it will get involved.

Also @ Drace, you make it sound like it will become the next WW3,even though that's probably not your intention.

Well WW1 started out by just the assassination of the Archduke of Austria-Hungary.
Also, at the time of war, any country that has held a grudge against another jumps to a fight.

There is no way the US will get openly involved in this conflict. The key word is "openly." Of course the US is going to send arms, ammo, and money to Georgia. But there will be no clear evidence of it. The US cannot put itself in open hostilities with Russia again.

Well Russia hasn't fully recovered from the breakup of the SU. At this point, the US can beat Russia, but yeah their not going to risk it. Concerning the Us is in an economic crises.

Russia is an evil country!!

How incredibly racist. Theres mass murderers that aren't called racist, and here you come calling people you don't even know evil. I got news for you, my family lived in Russia for thousands of years, and I am not evil.
