look at religion over the years starting way back at medieval times the crusades or holy war caused many deaths all in the name of Christianity and that they killed people of other religion (i forgot the religion but i believe it was Muslim)in the name of there god and jumping back to modern times you can even base 9/11 on a religion if you can justify so is it not an honor to die suicide bombing or plane jacking if you can justify that you did it in the name of the Muslim god

so basically im looking for the opinion's of people on armor games do you think religion's worth it? please at least attempt to back up your answer

I think we need it. It gives people hope, and the will to keep living.

No one is going to kill themselves or "stop" living, since it seems to be in our genes to have the will to survive. Every atheist seems to be fine without it.

Religion offers false hope of an after life. Whats the point? It just makes people anti-intellectuals.

Are you calling us anti-intellectuals because it seems so false to you? Everyone has their own point of view. I see Christianity as something not possibly proven, but just something that I believe in.

Athiests are fine because they don't see things in the same light as I, or any other religious individual does.

Plainly, NO. I think religion is stupid really. With some religions, I think the people can be somewhat stupid to. I am dark all together, so I need no religion.

Most Atheist believes in evolution and other science-things like that. I've always thought of people who don't believe in anything, science, religion, andthing else in between, don't know what they're thinking yet. Everyone believes in something in a way. It's just one is called a theory, and the other is called a religion.

As for religion causing wars and stuff like that. I don't think so, it's more, like other people have said, an easy reason to get people to do something. The people who abuse people's belief in something are just trying to get more power, and use religion to help it. However religion itself, I believe, has done nothing but helped a lot of people keep an on-track life, or at least somewhat managed one.

Not at all. I used to defend Christianity myself. Ended up as a psycho nihilist/determinist/agnostic.

Anyway, most of those who are religious will ignore science and such.

Anti-intellectualism describes a sentiment of hostility towards, or mistrust of, intellectuals and intellectual pursuits. This may be expressed in various ways, such as attacks on the merits of science, education, art, or literature.

This is what I seen.

I raised the statement to say that people do not need a promise of an after life to keep living, thus religion is useless. I used athiests as an example.

Long time ago, the pharaoh was God himself, and everyone else was his slave. We slowly evolved and now we are beginning to see religion whither away.

Although, for most, in America anyways, its been replaced with kids who think their Christian but don't care at all and just go out and shop all day (girls) and the guys, another form of retardness.

If there was no religion, people would find something else to fight over. What's the difference?

This is an ineteresting thread because arguably if human beings only relied on rationality it is relatively easy to justify immoral activities in your own eyes. EG 'why shouldnt i break into this house to steal their nice things as it will benefit me'. Of course there are other factors but some scholars say that without religion being created by man then there possibly could have never been any moral codes instilled in our modern societies. So even though it may not make sense to some people now, it still has its uses.

For one of the first times, I agree with Drace. Haha

Anyways, the government loves religion. It is what keeps us apart. Race also keeps us apart but I will focus on religion. Imagine if we were all one religion. We would be unified mostly and could actually make some changes about the government. Instead, we are too worried about arguing with the opposite religions.

Religion is used as an excuse for wars that include it. If I got into a fight with another person, I would want people to back me up. Who do I get? People with the same beliefs so I say that all [insert some religion] are against the kid I am fighting with. Now that kids gets his religion to back him up. Instead of stating why we are actually fighting, we have a "religion war".

Woody, although religion could be what gave us morals (which I would argue against), it does not mean that we will lose our morals if religion is gone. Actually, we'd be more open. This is evident as most do not take religion seriously. Eg, almost every teenager. The serious things such as murder are actually quite natural.(Fear causes major changes in body.) I wouldn't say there is anything to worry about. I can argue logiclly all I want but i'll leave it to that athiests have mlrals. Also, we learn morals from parents and from society. Only those obsessed in religion actually learn morals from religion, and these are usually dumb ones. Eg, homosexuality is wrong.

Btw, I'm typing on iPod touch, hence the grammar and possible spelling mistakes :-$

Yes we go way back in the A.D's there was a lot of wars back them and do you know what caused them?? Religion but my point is religion has not caused everything around the world you know what has. Us humans we pollute the air we cause wars we decide to be harsh to the people different from us.
