Well, this was borne out of two things; The recent events of last night, and BigPo saying he would ban people like nnine almost as soon as they started. So, that got me thinking, and I came up with this:
Hunter/Killer Mods.
Essentially, it allows normal people 'half' mod powers, or the mods we already have another option.
What hapens is this:
Lets say some guy (or girl) is spamming, flamming, trolling, you take your pick. He is either reported to the Hunter/Killer Mod, or the H/K Mod finds him.
The Mod will warn that player, and give him the consequences of what will happen if he continues.
If the 'Target' continues with his actions, the H/K Mod can do something that is a cross between a 'Temp Ban' and a 'Mute'. The 'Target' is sent into a 'rison' or a holding place where he cant do anything. The Mods or Admins can then review his (or her)'s file, and then deem if its worthy enough of a ban, or an IP Ban.
This allows the 'Target' to be dealt with in a more efficient way, and in a safer way, as the mods are contemplatening the 'Targets' Future in a Safe Enviroment, instead of while the He or She is on a Spamming Rampage.
Ofcourse, there are some limitations.
1) Power. Should the H/K Mods have the power to have just a normal 'Ban' Power? I think NO. This might lead to a 'Newb' Spammer getting Banned.
2) Over-Banning. What if a H/K Mod starts T/Banning people who he/she just doesnt get along with? He could get into a debate, and BAM! Half the opposition is gone. This is also one of the benefits of a 'Prison' for those caught by H/K Mods. --- H/K Mods: Hunter/Killer Mods
T/Ban: Temporary/Ban
Target: Those under suspect by the H/K Mods --- Kinda sounds like a secret police... Oh, and instead of having 'Ban-Hammers', should the H/K Mods have 'Ban-Mallets'? :P
Maby the deleted items could be moved into a special folder/file, and kept untill needed?
Possibly, possibly not. That would have to include a new "hide" function or something.
Which is why we need H/K Mods, to lighted the burden of the current Mods and/or Admins we have right now.
First of all, the staff is busy with something else, and no kind of mod will be elected until they have the time. Second, well, it does not mean we need those, we need mods in general. Otherwise we would have to have merit mods, here-and-now-trouble-mods (like what you are saying), spam mods and so on. Because all these things are current problems.
But the Spammer/Flammer/Troll is moved to a 'rison' where they cant do any harm, and remain there until the time is found where they can be dealt with accordingly.
In the case of instant trouble. If the mods are simply for hunting down spam, again, check the games.
The H/K Mods would be 'unmarked' (as in not having colored text or a big 'Moderator' on there Post. They would remain incognito, and would only deal with the most severe offenders.
I have gotten that much, but you still need to actually take the responsibility. Writing the ban message, reporting to Carlie, finding the flames/spam and so on. Or, for this to work out, flames/trolls hunting, since spam is a constant problem.
What I am saying is, do we really want mini mods that gets bored in the calm times, or do we want actual mods that can make sure the entire forum is running?
There wouldn't be much point in having people responsible enough to handle the heaviest of our tools (deletion and ban), yet not be able to edit a simple title.
We need more real mods who can do it all.
Honestly, though, this is exactly what I've been doing. I locked my profile comments for a long time (and I'm still not paying enough attention to them), because I do not have time or motivation to full-time moderate everything we can. So I pounce the occasional mass spammer in the forums, tackle the troll accounts I find, report stuff to Carlie for perm bans... Currently I sorta am what you're suggesting, and as long as I'm online people can contact me via AIM or MSN and have the problems dealt with quickly.
But why should one who does that not be able to do the rest as well? I don't go searching for merit worthy game comments these days, but if someone have won a contest and wants their merit reward, sure, I can give it. Oh, your thread needs to be renamed? Sure, I can do that, takes no more time than what it takes to type the new title.
Seriously, allowing someone to be able to ban without giving them the other little abilities, it doesn't make sense. If they're responsible enough to get the ban tool, they're responsible enough for the rest.
As for the idea, I have seen people responding to Nnine (fx), either saying he should stop of simply replying to his threads, and I cannot say this enough: Do NOT reply to that kind of 'users'. At all. During a spam/flame/troll attack, go SOMEWHERE ELSE for a while. That way the mods will be able to track down all the stupid comments without having to look through other threads as well, and you will not end up angry and/or banned because of some stupid temper problem.
Wish more people realized that. When people post after a spammer, the spammers name is no longer the last person who posted, and the chance of finding the post is lowered...
Thank you, I am glad you agree with me. I've suggested this to Carlie countless times, but she has just ignored it.
Again, it is the responsibility of the staff, or more likely Dan to agree with who to give this spot, and he is currently busy. Carlie needs to have the mods-to-be approved by the owner of the site...
And no respect for how many mods Kongregate has, since after what I hear they are not doing a very good job. Quality over quantity.
